WHEREAS Dr. Donald Schell served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service in phases from 1962 to 2002; and

WHEREAS Dr. Schell has a 40-year history with the University, beginning as a graduate teaching and research assistant and ending as the director of the Institute of Marine Science, and has applied the whole of his experience to the teaching and advising of countless students, in addition to serving on, co-chairing and chairing dozens of undergraduate and graduate student committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Schell has earned an international reputation for his work in stable isotope patterns in oceanographic and biological systems; and has conducted research in areas of particular interest to Alaskans, including arctic trophic dynamics, marine mammal migrations, and carbon accumulation and cycling in arctic tundra; and whose work in these areas has led to improved knowledge of the critical habitat and life cycle of bowhead whales, the provenance of polar bears and changes in the productivity of Bering Sea fisheries, all of which have had a direct bearing on the use and management of these resources; and

WHEREAS Dr. Schell's discoveries from his studies of stable isotopes have been applied by scientists around the globe to improve their knowledge of food webs in ecosystems ranging from forest to ocean, one of the results having led to a revised understanding of bowhead whale populations and harvesting practices; and whose techniques in managing marine mammal populations have spread around the world as far as Australia and South Africa;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Donald Schell for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Schell and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Donald Schell as Professor of Marine Sciences and Water Resources, Emeritus; and
