the title of
Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus

WHEREAS Mr. Brian C. Paust served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1978 to 2002; and

WHEREAS Mr. Paust has demonstrated his devotion to the dissemination and practical application of knowledge by conducting public workshops designed to add value to Alaska's seafood products and thereby increasing the economic value of Alaska's fishing industry; and has garnered tremendous respect as a Marine Advisory Program agent committed to serving the needs of the people in Southeast Alaska for more than 20 years; and

WHEREAS Mr. Paust is a renowned expert on marine fisheries, and has contributed greatly to developing markets and seafood marketing techniques; and is a prominent advisor to the local fisheries and marine processing industries; and whose conscientious professionalism has earned him an international reputation for being a consistently reliable and accurate resource for information and assistance; and has authored, co-authored or edited more than 40 books and articles on the Alaskan marine fishing and seafood industry; and

WHEREAS Mr. Paust has exemplified the role of public service by linking the University, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and the residents of the State; and has contributed significantly to the economic development of Southeast Alaska by tirelessly seeking to improve the fishing and seafood processing industries; and whose work with an extensive range of fishermen, aquaculturists and other marine users has led to sustainable and profitable businesses, contributing greatly to the economy of marine-dependent communities; and has become a well-known resource for the transfer of knowledge to Alaska fishermen, including providing a better understanding of oceanographic conditions that helped hundreds of trollers and longliners fish more effectively;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Brian C. Paust for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. Paust and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Mr. Brian C. Paust as Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. Brian C. Paust, and conveyed to Mr. Paust on this day of May 12, 2002.
