Student Technology Competencies
I. MANAGEMENT
GOAL: Candidates will be able to manage technology resources in their classroom.
ISTE Descriptor (1): Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.
- Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of basic computer operating system tasks: setting operating parameters (monitor color and depth, speaker volume, time and date, sleep/hibernate, dock/taskbar), creating documents and folders, copying and moving documents and folders, locating and adding printers, finding files, file sharing, creating accounts on multi-user systems, taking screen shots, and compressing (zipping) documents and folders.
- Candidates will create documents demonstrating correct use of Microsoft Word’s word processing/page layout conventions: entering international or special characters (e.g, ©, £, ¥, é, ñ, etc.), creating lists and outlines, creating and sorting tables, using spell and grammar checkers, inserting, resizing, cropping, and wrapping text around images, formatting columns and sections, drawing shapes and diagrams, using markup language, and using headers and footers.
- Candidates will demonstrate at least two methods of creating a PDF file: from the computer operating system, from a Word document, from Adobe Acrobat.
- Candidates will create documents using Inspiration that include the correct use of: topics, links, notes, hyperlinks, images, and text formatting.
- Candidates will export Inspiration documents to supported external programs: PowerPoint, Word, jpeg image, and web page.
- Candidates will create PowerPoint documents that demonstrate the correct use of: creating new slides, adding bulleted text, inserting, resizing and cropping images, inserting sounds and movies, changing slide backgrounds and color schemes, inserting transitions, animating text and objects, and inserting hyperlinks.
- Candidates will create an Excel database (list) document that demonstrates the correct use of data entry and field type.
- Candidates will manipulate an Excel database (list) demonstrating the correct use of sorting by ascending and descending order (alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically), and filtering on less than, greater than, and dual parameters.
- Candidates will use Excel to create a chart from a given dataset.
- Candidates will demonstrate the correct use of basic functions (=sum(), =average()) and formulas (e.g, =E2*B3, =C5-C6) in an Excel spreadsheet document.
- Candidates will demonstrate the correct use of text, number, and cell formatting in an Excel spreadsheet document.
- Candidates will demonstrate consideration for the placement and deployment of technology resources in their classroom.
II. INSTRUCTION
GOAL: Candidates will be able to use technology tools to implement instruction, create instructional materials, and assess student products.
ISTE Descriptor (2): Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.
ISTE Descriptor (3): Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning.
ISTE Descriptor (6): Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons that incorporate standard word processing conventions and formatting options, such as text formatting, lists, outlines, graphics, tables, headers and footers, hyperlinks, columns, drawing tools, and markup techniques.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons using a digital graphic organizer.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons using a digital presentation program such as PowerPoint, AppleWorks, etc.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons using spreadsheets and spreadsheet database functions for graphing and analyzing information.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons that use multimedia tools (including but not limited to graphics, digital photography, digital video, digital audio).
- Candidates will publish age- or topic-appropriate instructional material to a variety of Internet-based sources such as web sites, portals, or blogs.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons that assist students in evaluating information and media resources for reliability and validity.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons that ensure the safety and privacy of their students in on-line situations.
- Candidates will design age- or topic-appropriate lessons regarding copyright laws and plagiarism issues.
- Candidates will locate or construct rubrics that assess both the content and presentation of student projects created with a variety of technologies, such as web pages, digital videos, or presentation programs.
- Candidates will demonstrate at least three examples of implemented lessons in which P-12 students apply technology as outlined in Objectives 1 - 7, each with evidence of adherence to Objectives 8, 9 and 10.
III. INTEGRATION
GOAL: Candidates will be able to make informed decisions about the place of technology in their classrooms.
ISTE Descriptor (2): Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.
ISTE Descriptor (6): Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice.
- Candidates will access age- or topic-appropriate technologies for their content areas.
- Candidates will evaluate new and emerging technologies appropriate for their content areas. (Content methods classes)
- Candidates will model age- or topic-appropriate behavior with regard to copyright and plagiarism in teacher-created materials.
IV: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
GOAL: Candidates will be able to use technology to enhance professional productivity, collaboration, and communication
ISTE Descriptor (4) Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
ISTE Descriptor (5): Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice.
- Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of district-based or classroom-based student records systems.
- Candidates will use appropriate technology to demonstrate analysis of student progress toward identified learning objectives
- Candidates will demonstrate the ability to utilize technology tools for professional development, such as engaging in professional dialog, identifying pedagogical models, contacting subject area or professional content associations, and accessing primary resources.
