UAF Undergraduate Secondary Post-Baccalaureate Licensure Program
Admissions Process and Requirements
Admission to the undergraduate secondary post-baccalaureate licensure program includes meeting requirements of the undergraduate admission process and of the School of Education (SOE). Candidates who do NOT gain acceptance into the Graduate School may apply to the undergraduate program. Students will take their courses at the undergraduate (400) level and will NOT be able to apply these courses toward a Master of Education degree.
Submit the following information directly to UAF Office of Admissions (also submit a copy of these items to SOE):
- UAF undergraduate application and $40 application fee. (Designate on the application that you are applying to the secondary post-baccalaureate licensure program.);
- Official transcript of bachelor’s degree from accredited institution, minimum grade point average of 2.75. Applicants who have attended more than one university should include transcripts from all universities showing courses that made up their undergraduate degree.
Submit the following information directly to the School of Education:
- Application Packet Checklist;
- Alaska passing scores from the Praxis I exam in reading, writing and mathematics (see attached sheet);
- Academic Analysis form | Word file | PDF file |;
- Three current letters of reference | Word file | PDF file | that address qualifications and potential as a teacher,
- A personal statement of 500-800 words (two to three pages) explaining your motivation to become a teacher. Describe how your academic qualifications, work and/or other experiences have prepared you for a career in teaching. Elaborate on personal strengths you possess, including your ability to work collaboratively with others. Describe your experiences with adolescents in instructional and supervisory capacities. Explain why you believe you can help young people of all cultures be successful in school.
- Extemporaneous writing sample (Students who are currently residing in Fairbanks may complete the writing sample February 25, 2006, 10:00 a.m. in Gruening 208, UAF. Students unable to complete the sample on this date should contact the School of Education for alternative times. Email Karen Eiler at fnkje@uaf.edu or call 474-6180 to confirm test participation. Applicants who are residing outside the Fairbanks area should contact Karen Eiler for writing sample instructions and proctor information.
- Demonstrated evidence of technology competence which can be shown by successful completion of ED 237, Technology Tools for Teachers or passing School of Education’s computer technology competency test (Applicants who have not met this requirement will be required to complete ED 237 during the summer program. The computer competency test will be offered several times during the year for those applicants in the Fairbanks area. Applicants outside the Fairbanks area will need to obtain a test proctor. See attached technology skills list.);
- Demonstrated evidence of content competency in one of the UAF
approved secondary endorsement areas. Content competency may
be shown either by a degree with a major in one of these areas or
- By passing a Praxis II content test with a passing score as set by the State of Alaska, or
- By evaluation of transcript for equivalency of an academic major (may be requested).
The Department of Education and Early Development will, upon request, add additional endorsement areas based on an 18-credit minor posted on an intern’s transcript.
Candidates applying for admission to the secondary post-baccalaureate licensure program in spring 2006 or
later will be required to meet new undergraduate degree requirements as listed in admission checklists or pass Praxis II. - Placement Materials: For purposes of placement, submit a “Dear Mentor Teacher” letter (a 300-500 word summary of your education and work history and a brief explanation of your interest in teaching) and a resume. These items may be digitally submitted to Karen Eiler at fnkje@uaf.edu. The School of Education determines placement approval, change or termination.
