Licensure Toward Masters of Education in Secondary Education
Candidates complete some course work at the graduate (600) level and the remainder at the undergraduate (400) level. Course work at the 600 level is more intense and of greater volume than at the 400 level. The 400 and 600 levels of the same course meet at the same time.
At the successful conclusion of the program candidates are eligible for an Alaska initial teaching license and have completed 15 credits towards a master’s degree in secondary education.
Admission to the graduate level secondary post-baccalaureate licensure program toward M.Ed. in Secondary Education includes meeting requirements of the UAF Graduate School and of the School of Education. Graduate candidates complete five of the licensure courses at the graduate (600) level. Candidates who do NOT gain acceptance into the Graduate School may apply to the licensure only option.
Admissions Process and Requirements
Submit the following information directly to UAF Office of Admissions:
- UAF graduate application and fee. It is recommended that you submit your application on line. Under Plan of Study – please designate – Education - Licensure Program – Secondary.
Submit each of the bulleted items directly to the School of Education
- Must submit official transcript of bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and official transcripts from all institutions attended. Students must have a cumulate undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. Students with less than a 3.0 GPA may be considered for conditional admission;
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores if cumulative undergraduate GPA is below 3.0;
- Three current letters of reference that address qualifications and potential as a teacher (use Recommendation Form, PDF format);
- A vitae/resume;
- Personal Statement of 1200-1500 words;
- Alaska passing scores for the Praxis I exams in reading, writing and mathematics.
- Academic Content Testing
- Content Area Exams. Candidates must submit a score report from the relevant content knowledge Praxis II Subject test for each content area the applicant expects to teach. The scores must meet the score set by the State of Alaska. In addition to the Praxis II Content test, World Language applicants must complete the World Language Exams.
- World Language Exams. Applicants applying to teach a World Language are required to submit scores for the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPic II) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPI). Applicants must meet the Advanced Low rating for both tests.
- Demonstrated evidence of content competency in
one of the UAF approved secondary endorsement
areas.
- The applicants holds a degree in an approved UAF secondary endorsement area or;
- Those applicants who do not hold a degree in the academic content area that they are expected to teach, must have documentation of content competency reviewed by a Secondary Program faculty review team prior to application to program. Additional course work may be required to enter the program.

- Demonstrated evidence of technology competence;
- Placement Materials;
- Interview: All applicants are required to interview with secondary faculty as part of the admission process. Applicants residing outside the Fairbanks area will be provided with an 800-number.
