Accreditation Information
Overview
All UAF School of Education programs that lead to a license or to an additional endorsement have been approved by the State of Alaska using the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Curriculum (NASDTEC) Standards.
The School of Education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7496. This accreditation covers initial teacher education programs and advanced educator preparation programs.
NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teacher and other professional school personnel. The School of Education hosted the NCATE Board of Examiners (BOE) visit in September 2004. The next scheduled BOE visit is in September 2009.
As part of the NCATE review process, six School of Education programs submitted review materials to national Specialty Professional Associations (SPAs). The post-baccalaureate initial elementary licensure program was reviewed and approved by the Association of Childhood Education International. The secondary post-baccalaureate initial licensure program submitted review materials to four separate SPAs: the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council of Teachers of English, National Science Teachers Association, and the National Council for the Social Studies. All four SPAs approved the secondary post-baccalaureate programs. The advanced reading endorsement program was reviewed and approved by the International Reading Association.
