1. What is the deadline for applying to graduate school and when will I find out if I'm accepted?
- Application deadline for admission to the fall semester: March 1. Application deadline for admission to spring semester: October 1.
- Notification of acceptance for students with COMPLETE applications is given within 2 months after deadline.
- Please note, the M. Ed. programs in Elementary or Secondary Education have different deadlines, please see program information.
2. Are the degree programs at the UAF School of Education accredited?
Yes, UAF is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Additionally the School of Education holds National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation.
3. Do I need the GRE?
The GRE is required if your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0.
4. Is there a special format for the letters of recommendation, statement of goals or resume?
- Letters: Address to "The Admissions Committee," letters should speak to applicant's work or academic skills.
- Statement: 4 -5 pages long. Counseling program has specific guidelines (Put pdf link here)
- Resume: Include education, work and volunteer experience
5. How long does the degree program take?
- Minimum - 2 years
- Maximum - 7 years (or request for an extension)
6. Can I do the program entirely by distance?
- Entirely by distance: Cross Cultural Education, Language and Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction
- Requires one summer residency in Fairbanks: Elementary
Education, Secondary Education, Reading, and Counseling.
1. I've completed the licensure portion of my Master of Education in Secondary Education program, what do I have left?

3. How do a select a committee?
Students must discuss the composition of their graduate committee with their
advisor and should have a committee in place by the end of their second semester. There
must be at least 3 members on each graduate committee composed of the following:
Member 1 - Chair: must be a doctorate level, full-time
faculty member who has at least a joint appointment in the School of Education
Member 2: must be at least a master's level, full-time
faculty member but does not necessarily have to be a member of the School
of Education
Member 3: must be at least a master's level individual
who has significant experience or expertise in the requisite field; they
do not have to be affiliated with the university, but if they are not a
member of the university they need to be approved by the department chair. Please
provide resume.
