Technology Requirement FAQs

1. What is the SOE Technology Requirement?

Starting in the fall of 2006, each student in the elementary and secondary teacher education programs will be required to have a laptop computer that meets specific standards for hardware and software. Please refer to this extensive FAQ for more information.

2. Will SOE provide free laptops for students?

No. Students will need to either purchase or lease laptops that meet program requirements.

3. Can I lease a laptop from SOE?

No, we are not able to lease laptops to students at this time.

4. Will financial aid cover the cost of leasing or purchasing laptops?

Yes. Since the laptop is a program requirement, financial aid can be arranged to cover the cost. If you have questions about how a laptop purchase will fit in with your current financial aid package, please contact Tamara Hornbuckle (fntmh@uaf.edu; 474-6628) or Deanna Dieringer (fndld@uaf.edu; 474-7256) in the UAF Financial Aid Office.

5. Does SOE offer special pricing for laptops?

Yes. The School of Education has negotiated special pricing with Apple Computer for MacBooks and MacBook Pros that meets all requirements for hardware and softtware and includes an extended warranty, case, and other extras. These laptops are available now for purchase (not for lease) to students enrolled in any SOE program. Contact Skip Via (ffsv@uaf.edu) for more information, or refer to this page for information about the laptops.

6, What kind of support can I expect if I purchae a laptop?

If you purchase one of the recommended systems (see above), SOE will provide additional software, orientation programs and materials, and as much technical support as we can. Although we will offer as much help as we can for other models or platforms, we cannot guarantee that we can provide the same level of support due to limited staff and resources. You should be aware that the recommended laptops include a three-year extended warranty (AppleCare) that provides free technical support from Apple and free repair services should something go wrong. If you are purchasing a different computer, we strongly recommend purchasing a similar extended warranty if it is available.
