10 Essentials

Listed below are the Ten Essential pieces of equipment that everyone should carry when headed into the backcountry (According to Freedom of the Hills, 7th Ed.). Outdoor Adventures also added two pieces of equipment we see as necessary.

  1. Extra Food
  2. Extra Water
  3. Extra Clothing
  4. Emergency Shelter
  5. Illumination
  6. Navigation Tools
  7. First-Aid Kit
  8. Repair Kit
  9. Sun Protection
  10. Fire Starting tools

Outdoor Adventures also suggests a watch to help keep track of time and distance covered and a communication device. We carry a sat-phone and/or VHF Radio on all of our trips. If access to those is unavailable, atleast carry some form of signaling device such as flares, mirrors, etc.

Be safe out there...
