Developmental English Classes for International Students Fall 2009
1. Preparatory College Writing I (ESL) DEVE F060-R01, CRN 84034, TR 11:30-1:00, 3 credits
This class is designed so that students who are learning English as a second languag can practice writing sentences and paragraphs in English. We also study areas that often give ESL students difficulty, such as idioms, phrasal verbs and articles.
2. Preparatory College Writing II DEVE F070, 3 credits
All sections of this class teach students to write essays (2-3 pages long) in English. Students study 3-page readings. There are no sections designed for students studying English as a second language, but international students are welcome in this “mixed” class. See the class schedule for a list of 070 sections and other registration information. Section R04 comes with a required 1-credit reading class, DEVS F058-R02, which focuses on vocabulary study.
3. Preparatory College Writing III
DEVE F109-R01, CRN 86504, MWF 10:30-11:30, 3 credits
For students who have already taken DEVE F070 or who are more advanced but not quite
ready for ENGL F111x, DEVE F109 is designed to help students prepared for ENGL F111x.
Students write essays, study 5-7 page readings, and do a small research project.
4. English Skills (ESL)
DEVE F068A-ROB Spelling/Vocabulary ESL 1 credit
DEVE F068B-ROD Grammar/Usage ESL 1 credit
DEVE F068C-ROI Sentence/Paragraph ESL 1 credit
International students often find it useful to sign up for 1-3 sections of DEVE F-068 in addition to their other writing classes. This class is a lab (not a lecture/discussion class) where students work independently and one-on-one with an instructor, on the areas listed above (spelling, vocabulary, etc.). The three sections listed above are for ESL students only; they meet MWF from 2:15-3:15 pm. International students are also welcome to sign up for any section of DEVE F068, not just the ESL sections. See page 65 in the class schedule for a complete list of sections, meeting times, and CRNs.
