Some UAF departments also enable you to earn
credit in their discipline through credit for prior learning
(CPL). One Rural Development student was successful in
earning 24 credits using this CPL process. As a B.A. degree
student, you can earn up to 25% of your total degree requirements
(i.e., up to 30 credits) through this method. You must follow
the established UAF procedures for earning CPL credit. Faculty
in participating departments review portfolios of your work
or other documentation to determine if credit is warranted, and
credit is awarded for work linked to specific catalog courses.
Note that credit for prior learning is not considered UAF
residence credit, and it will not be applied in determining
your grade point average.
Before you begin the CPL process discuss your
ideas with your faculty advisor. Review the UAF catalog
and compare your knowledge, experiences, and skills with
those required for specific courses. Then briefly sketch
out where your learning experiences might be suitable for
college credit and consider how you will document them. Review this
with your advisor (and RD academic program head, if necessary).
