"You not only earn a BA degree, but have a chance to meet people from all over the state that are active in their communities - that in itself is a learning experience."

Earning a BA degree in Rural Development

The degree prepares you for community leadership by providing a broad understanding of rural issues in the global economy and hands-on skills for effective community leadership. Over 175 students have earned their B.A. degree in Rural Development since the program began in 1984.

As a student in the program, you develop a concentration in one of five areas:

  1. Community Business & Economic Development
  2. Tribal and Local Government Administration
  3. Rural Health and Human Services Management
  4. Community Research and Indigenous Knowledge
  5. Land Resources and Environmental Management

The program is designed especially for mature and nontraditional students in rural Alaska communities. Many are returning to higher education after many years away from study. Most students are already employed, and many are active as community leaders. Nearly all have family and other obligations that make it difficult to complete a degree in a traditional campus setting.
