Sam
Smith is a Cu'pik Elder who is recently
"retired" from his 25 years working for
the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Center
substance abuse treatment and wellness
programs. As with each and every Elder

diverse and extensive personal and
professional educational history |

You
are invited to attend, participate, and
even risk a bit of transformation at our
3rd annual conference dedicated to
innovations and excellence in teaching
and learning. While we will have a full
three days of stimulating and engaging
sessions, we will also enjoy time
drumming, listening to the wisdom of
Alaska Native Elders, collegial
interaction, and the refreshing winter
season. Early March is a great time to
view the aurora borealis aka north
lights, visit an international ice
sculpture exhibit, take a dog sled ride,
and to show off your finest winter wear.
This year's conference will include
delightful and informing teaching and
learning experts from our great state of
Alaska along with many of our widely
celebrated leaders in the field from the
lower 48 States, Canada, and beyond.
The conference will be held on the
scenic Tanana River bank at the Princess
Hotel which is about 10 minutes from the
airport and 15 minutes from just about
any other place in Fairbanks. The
Princess Hotel offers luxury
accommodations at off-season prices and
excellent, warm, and abundant meeting
space. Perhaps, too, this would be an
excellent opportunity to bring a friend
or family members for an extended winter
vacation.
Planned highlights of our 2008
conference include distance education
for the arctic and other remote
settings; transformative learning and
teaching; telebehavioral health
(teaching and treating through two-way
synchronous, visual communications);
cultural strengths and contexts of
learning; the wisdom of our Elders; and
a toolbox full of practical teaching
tools for higher education and training.
Invited guest speakers and facilitators
this year include Dr. Todd Zakrajsek,
Director of the Faculty Center for
Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan
University and Director of the Lilly
North Conference; Dr. Gretchen Bersch,
Professor Emeritis of Adult Education
from the University of Alaska Anchorage,
Dr. Barbara Millis, Director of the
Excellence in Teaching Program at the
University of Nevada at Reno, Dr. Ian
Rawson, Chair of the Hospital Albert
Schweitzer and current president of the
Hospital Council at Western
Pennsylvania; and Dr. Barbara Vacarr, a
psychologist, Associate Professor and
Director of the Learning Community
Bachelors and Co-Director of the Ph.D.
in Adult Learning at Lesley University;
and many others!
Our conference has limited space and
enrollment so early registration is
recommended.
