Student Christie
Carlo receives Roger Lang Youth Leadership Award during
AFN.
Christie Carlo grew up in Galena, Alaska. She graduated high school in
May of 2007. She is a highly motivated young lady, constantly
challenging herself, working very hard at her studies and encouraging
others to do the same. While in high school, Christie took classes in
cosmetology from Galena Interior Learning Academy to learn skills that
she will use to help pay for college.
Culture plays a significant part in Christie’s life and is shown by her
beading, sewing and participating in the Galena Native Dance Group. She
enjoys helping her neighbors and involvement in her community is of
great importance to her. She is truly a role model and is dedicated to
making life better for her people.
Christie obtained a State of Alaska Emergency Trauma Technician
certificate through CRCD Health Programs
Galena Summer HEED program
(funded
in part by Denali Commission),
and she is also a certified lifeguard. She volunteers for the Galena
Emergency Medical Services Group, and has logged numerous hours on call.
In March of 2007, Christie received the Chief Andrew Isaac Future
Leader Award from Doyon Limited for her leadership qualities. In the
summer of 2006, she attended a six-week scholarship program at the
University of North Dakota, taking courses in physics and chemistry. Her
next goal is to become and Emergency Medical Technician, which is
another step toward her ultimate dream of becoming a physician.
Christie plans to attend the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in the
fall of 2008. We wish her much luck and prosperity in her future years
of college. |
