Campus Insights from Buck Sharpton

Student Success: Creating Conditions that Matter

Recently George Kuh visited our campus and spoke with a number of groups about his book Student Success in College: Creating Conditions that Matter. He introduced 11 effective educational practices currently used by other universities to retain students. The chapter Enriching Educational Experiences details the importance of programs similar to those offered under the direction of the UAF Office of Student and Enrollment Services, including the UAF Leadership Program, Career Services, the Residence Life EDGE program, Outdoor Adventures and Orientation, to name a few.

One of the strategic goals of Student and Enrollment Services is to "Provide direct programs and services designed to retain students, and provide leadership in university-wide retention efforts." Making Connections, the Orientation theme this fall, did just that by connecting new students to a variety of opportunities UAF provides to assist students in finding their place. As incoming students become acquainted with UAF, faculty and staff need to encourage participation in activities that enrich and enhance the classroom experience.

Let me focus on just one of those opportunities. Our Career Services program organizes and coordinates a wide variety of internship experiences for undergraduate and graduate students at UAF. Each fall we welcome back students from a variety of summer experiences including local, national and international internships with engineering firms, Native corporations, accounting firms, federal and state fish and wildlife agencies and many other work environments. These experiences are part of what Dr. Kuh describes as a "success-oriented campus culture." Creating that culture requires a unified effort. If you have any questions or ideas, please speak to Patti Picha, director of Career Services at 7596, or visit 110 Eielson.
