CAMPUS INSIGHTS

UAF Graphic Standards

The start of a new academic year is similar to New Year's Day, in ways such as looking ahead to the year before us, making plans and committing ourselves to a new and improved way of doing things. While some of those plans tend to fall by the wayside quickly (like the pledge to make it to the gym every day), some actually do come to fruition.

One such improvement has been the increased use of the university logo as part of our mission to have a solid, recognizable and respected institutional identity. I know it has been difficult for some departments to let go of their old and beloved designs, but I also know that as UAF's brand is strengthened, everyone benefits. The consistent and uniform use of the UAF logo and graphic standards conveys an image of a university that works together across all its units and departments, and that maximizes all its resources--intellectual, financial and creative--to the betterment of all.

Most recently we have expanded our uniform institutional identity campaign from print publications to the web. This is yet another step in promoting a consistent image for the university. As with the other branding requirements, such as logo use and letterhead design, the website guidelines are designed to be flexible and easily adaptable to meet the needs of individual units while still maintaining a clear graphic connection to the university. Be sure to check out the guidelines at www.uaf.edu/univrel/guide/. As always, departments are strongly encouraged to consult with the designers at University Relations on all logo, print and website design issues. Consultations are free.

Again, I'd like to thank all of you for working together to make UAF's brand instantly identified and respected. While a reputation is much more than just a logo, that same logo is still incredibly powerful in its embodiment of such a vast and varied institution as ours. Our brand represents us--our students, our work, our role as educators, researchers and professionals--and we should take every opportunity to remind people of everything for which UAF stands.
