CAMPUS INSIGHTS - From Tim Barnett

Strategic Planning

UAF began initial strategic planning activities in the early 1990s. The first strategic plan, UAF 2000, guided the institution through the fiscal challenges of the last decade of the 20th century. UAF 2005 provided a valuable roadmap for the university as it examined new programs and directions following the arrival of the new millennium. It’s anticipated that Strategic Plan 2010 (SP2010) will further guide UAF as it responds to both internal and external influences in a rapidly changing world.

SP 2010 efforts were kicked off in early February. The nearly 30 strategic planning committee members appointed by the chancellor represent faculty, staff, students and include representatives from the rural campuses and Fairbanks community members. The timeframe for SP2010 is ambitious, with completion anticipated by the end of 2005. Nonetheless, the process will be thorough and include a review of the mission statement, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis of the university and the development of values and goals. In addition, all units within the university will participate in setting objectives specific to their areas that will support the university’s achievement of the SP2010 goals.

The term “strategic planning” means different things to each person and is dependent upon her/his past experiences with the process and subsequent results. Regardless of individual notions of strategic planning, this committee is collectively dedicated to developing an active and flexible document that has measurable goals and objectives. This plan will not sit on a shelf and gather dust; rather, it will be the cornerstone upon which all UAF planning efforts rest. SP2010 will actively guide the university as it strives to meet the education, research and service needs of Alaskans and other people of the circumpolar north, or anyone who wishes to avail her/himself of what this great university has to offer.

Visit the Strategic Planning Committee website and comment on the revised mission statement at www.uaf.edu/strategic/.
