Blanche Brunk was recently named director of CRA's health programs. The position was created due to significant growth in the allied and behavioral health programs over the past year. Susan Henrichs, SFOS, has been appointed dean of the graduate school and vice provost for instructional affairs. Henrichs began her new duties July 28. The TVC Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School recently received four hearts from the Fairbanks North Star Borough's Hearts for Kids program. The pilot project from the borough's Early Childhood Development Commission recognized the Bunnell House as one of only six care centers throughout the borough with standards high enough to receive its top rating. For more information visit www.alaskafamily.org/kids/. UAF and IARC hosted Sen. Stevens and U.S. Postmaster General John E. Potter at a federal stamp unveiling July 2. Staff members with IAB advised on the design of the 37-cent stamp, which features the flora and fauna of the arctic tundra. Margaret Murie, the first woman to graduate from the University of Alaska, turns 101 on Aug. 18. Murie has spent most of her life working on conservation efforts. The Rasmuson Library will be rededicated Sept. 12 from 2-3:30 p.m. during a ceremony hosted by Chancellor Lind and library director Paul McCarthy. Related events on Sept. 11 and 12 include guest lectures and a reading of the play Horace Kephart by Dennis Stephens. Construction projects around campus continue. The Sheenjek temporary parking lot is closed until Sept. 8 while a permanent lot is built. The West Ridge mall re-opening has been delayed due to recent rain. Yukon Drive will be detoured near the museum in late August for work laying pipes. Keep an eye out for signs and traffic revisions. Center will be closed until Aug. 25to accommodate an upgrade
to its power system. Users of the ATM are advised to use the teller
machines in the M-B-S complex or the Arctic Health Research Building.
During the closure, Wood Center employees, including those involved
in orientation and scheduling for the upcoming semester, are available by phone and
e-mail. UAF's Arctic Energy Technology Development Laboratory, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, has funded a five-kilowatt solid oxide fuel cell for testing in Fairbanks. This type of fuel cell holds promise for providing reliable and affordable energy to remote areas. KUAC-FM is now home to the production of the nationally broadcast Independent Native News, heard weekdays at 5:30 p.m. Longtime anchor Nellie Moore will continue to host the program from Anchorage. UAF will be featured on the ResearchChannel Aug. 15 in A Changing Landscape: Investigating a Warming Arctic. The ResearchChannel archives several programs produced at UAF. The UA Museum recently received a $701,000 grant from the Rasmuson Foundation for multimedia technology in the new Education Center and Arnold Espe Auditorium. Rory O'Neill, GI and staff council president, has been named the staff alliance chair. Lisa Sporleader, statewide, is the new staff alliance vice chair. The ARSC summer student intern program came to a close Aug. 14. The program hosted five students, from universities across the country, who worked on individual projects ranging from creation of 3D prints to modeling the ionosphere. The UAF Department of Military Science and Leadership welcomes Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Carlson as its new professor of military science. Kelly Hochstetler recently joined the staff of the Office of Research Integrity as the senior research compliance officer. Ken Larimore, Athletics and Recreation, was re-elected director of District 10 at the Athletic Equipment Managers' Association convention in Cleveland. District 10 covers Alaska, Canada and Germany. Lawrence Duffy, CSEM, has been elected secretary of the board of directors of the American Institute of Chemists. The International Permafrost Association recently accepted UAF's invitation to host the 9th International Conference on Permafrost in the summer of 2008. Jamie Beyerle, sophomore rifle team member, and Matt Emmons, former rifle team member and 2003 graduate, both recently won medals at the Zagreb World Cup in Croatia. Beyerle took the gold medal in the women's individual 50-meter, three-postion event. Emmons took the silver in the men's 50-meter event. They were the only U.S. medal winners at the competition. I would like to introduce you to our new Dean of Student Affairs Timothy Barnett. Barnett rose to the top of a nationwide search process for this critical position at UAF. He has served in a variety of student affairs capacities over his career and comes to UAF with impressive credentials. Barnett has worked at Biola University in Southern California, Loyola University in New Orleans and most recently Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he served as vice president of student affairs. He began his career in student affairs working in the student union field and brings a strong background in strategic planning, assessment, partnerships with faculty and student affairs auxiliary management. In spring 2002 he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to engage in research and discussion about strategic planning and diversity in Germany. Please welcome Dean Barnett to UAF! His fresh yet seasoned perspective on the wide variety of student issues that arise will help us make sure our students are getting the best possible assistance.
