Positive Patterns The start of fall semester is a time for celebrating students and the numbers they represent - credit hours, head count, residence hall occupancy, course enrollments, tuition revenue, etc. This is especially true when we see the surge in enrollments we've experienced the past two fall semesters. Positive enrollment patterns across all UAF campuses validate new academic offerings and affirm the reputations of our historical strengths. Increased student numbers are a gratifying symbol for the division of enrollment management. July 15 marked our first anniversary as a new unit at UAF. Originally made up of Admissions, Academic Advising, Financial Aid and the Registrar; enrollment management has grown to include the First Year Experience program, Orientation and the federally funded Student Support Services program. This year we've focused on developing communication channels among our own units and with other student service and academic departments. We've built the foundation for a strategic enrollment management plan to guide UAF's future retention and recruiting priorities and pursuits. In the next few months, we'll be asking for your ideas and input on shaping this important proposal. Over the next year, enrollment management directors will be working more closely with academic units to identify retention and recruitment priorities, as well as improve processes and services for students, staff and faculty. The start of an academic year may be the best time to pause and reflect on why we're here. It's easy to forget the broader picture while we and other units plan for the future and mind the everyday business of an educational institution. I urge you to step back and remember how privileged we are to share this common enterprise - higher education. As a land, sea, and space grant institution, UAF exemplifies the tripartite ideal - researchers who investigate new theories and explanations, teachers who cultivate scholars and practitioners, and community partners who share relevant knowledge with the public. It's an exceptional environment. I encourage you to work with colleagues and students to foster a university culture in which we can all engage in dialogue about our real reason for being here - pursuing knowledge, nourishing a learning community and modeling a robust spirit of inquiry for all Alaskans. |
