CAMPUS INSIGHTS - From Joe Hayes, Executive Director of the UAF Alumni Association

Fall Festivities

Fall is upon us. As we say goodbye to long summer nights and quiet floats down the Chena, we say hello to Alumni Reunion visitors and Starvation Gulch. Both events will be celebrated Oct. 2-4.

If you're a UAF alum, sign up to be part of the reunion festivities. The Princess Riverside Lodge will be the stage for today's awards luncheon. Five outstanding alumni will be recognized: Sandy Jamieson, Joe Nava, Dermot Cole, Gail Phillips and Peggy Beistline. Help us congratulate these fine folks for their years of service to UAF. Alumni Night at the Pub is tonight at 9 p.m. Come out and enjoy the tunes of Nostalgic Jam.

The Alumni Reunion is being held in conjunction with Starvation Gulch. This year marks our 80th Starvation Gulch, a celebration of new students and new beginnings. Started by President Bunnell in 1923 as a welcome to the new freshman class, Starvation Gulch has come to symbolize more than just the start of a new year; it's also a competition between student groups to see who can have the tallest flame and the most creative structure. It is a continuing part of UAF history, and we invite you to be a part of it. The bonfires will be lit at 10 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Taku parking lot.

Young or old, wood or no wood, I hope to see all of you at these festivities. For more information about the Alumni Reunion call 7081 or visit www.uaf.edu/alumni/. For more information about Starvation Gulch call 6026.
