The Critical Role of Student Employment

At UAF, more than 1,250 students take advantage of the opportunities for student employment. Student jobs have proven to be a positive factor in the retention of students as they pursue their educational objectives while they gain practical work experience.

Being an employee on campus gives our students a sense of community which helps them identify with the campus core values. Studies also show that student employees maintain a higher grade point average than students who don't have jobs, partly because of the skills they develop while working. While they learn positive work skills, they also develop organizational skills, communication techniques, teamwork and leadership--all traits employers seek in our graduates.

Early each semester, the UAF student job fair gives students the opportunity to learn more about positions available around our campus. Last fall 21 different offices were present to answer questions and offer guidance to those students seeking employment. More than 300 students took advantage of this opportunity to learn more about their potential on-campus employers.

Working with the Department of Career Services, the Exceptional Student Employment Award committee takes nominations from offices on campus and honors an exceptional student employee each semester. This past fall two students received this recognition: Kate Navarro from residence life and Sara Speziale from Wood Center. They are certainly not the only students who make our campus community so special, but they are indicative of the wealth of talent that our students provide to the university labor pool.

I encourage everyone with student employees to show their gratitude for the work they do. More opportunities will become available to supervisors during the remainder of this semester to participate in campuswide activities to honor our student employees, so be on the look out for them. Thanks to those of you who provide these extraordinary "outside the classroom" learning opportunities. Student employment is a great example of a win-win situation for everyone involved!
