from Mark Neumayr
The Future of IT at UAF

Information Technology affects every employee and student at UAF. Our abilities to communicate, to complete homework assignments, even to get paid, often rely upon the equipment and people providing electronic services. UAF has invested heavily in information technology, and we're usually listed among Yahoo's "Most Wired" universities. Yet we know that we have shortcomings.

Our first step in addressing them was commissioning Alex Hills of Carnegie Mellon University to study our IT environment and to make suggestions for improvements. His report was released to the UAF community during the week of January 25. The chancellor will now appoint a small team to gather comments on Hills' report and to propose an "action plan" for UAF.

The next step in providing modern, efficient IT services at UAF will not be cheap, so we have to ensure that we invest wisely. Please study the report, available online at www.uaf.edu/dcc/it/, and send your comments to the provost's office. It's a chance for you to help mold the future at UAF.
