Welcome Back
From Marshall Lind

Welcome to the start of the 2001 fall semester. As you look around the Fairbanks campus, you can see visible signs everywhere that we're building Alaska's future. Perhaps the most important part of UAF's future is to be known first and foremost as a university that focuses on students. As we greet a new class of freshmen, the sense of anticipation is as clear as the changing colors sweeping the stands of birch and aspen surrounding the campus.

Buildings that have served as prime examples of deferred maintenance needs for far too long will soon be revitalized. The beep and buzz of construction, the white ATCO trailers, huge cranes and exterior scaffolding are tangible evidence that things are changing for the better.

Our master planning effort has helped identify special places on campus and areas that need improvement. The current draft of the master plan is now available for review. It's the culmination of five months of work, involving a wide range of participants from the campus and the Fairbanks community. I encourage you to continue to provide input as you help us build the campus of the future.

Many of the changes are subtle - new pathways, sidewalks and green spaces have been designed to complement the way students use the campus. The Taku stairs near the Farmer's Loop entrance are gone, replaced by a switchback sidewalk. The stairs were failing to the point where they were unsafe. New stairs at the same location aren't an option because of the unstable hillside.

In addition to the physical changes to our campus, changes are underway within our core academic programs. I was pleased with the Aug. 10 editorial in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner for recognizing our efforts to provide programs to meet Alaska's employment needs and educate its citizens. The prospects for UAF and Alaska are full of opportunity and promise. Thank you for your part in helping to build Alaska's future.
