headlinesASUAF, under the leadership of Derek Miller, organized a campus vigil following the multiple, coordinated attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which claimed the lives of countless victims in the northeastern United States. The non-denominational gathering at Wood Center focused on respect, unity and peace. After brief remarks by Miller, UA President Mark Hamilton, UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind, United Campus Ministry representative David Moore and Father Gerald Ornowski, participants adjourned for quiet reflection and the lighting of candles at Constitution Park. On Sept. 14, UAF joined the rest of the nation in a day of remembrance by playing the bells of the Carillon over the noon hour. The following events have

is complete. Handrails along the sidewalk and benches are scheduled
to be installed by the end of September. A new bus shelter for this
parking lot is currently being designed. for your informationUAF is ranked fifth in the nation for the highest portion of classes with fewer than 20 students in the U.S. News & World Report 2001 college rankings for national universities: doctoral. UAF is the only public university listed in the top 10. Gov. Tony Knowles recently proclaimed September as College Savings Month, urging Alaskans to plan ahead for education costs and supporting the UA College Savings Plan. The University Fire Department has received a second Community Fire Assistance grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The $130,000 grant will be used to purchase new air packs for university fire fighters. Adam Chavarria, the associate director of the White House office on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, will visit UAF on Sept. 21. Chavarria is responsible for insuring that the Department of Education and all relevant federal agencies are promoting the participation of Hispanic Americans in all federal education programs. The Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting a luncheon for Chavarria at noon on Sept. 21 in the Wood Center Memorial Conference Room. For more information call 7300. The Statewide Office of Human Resources announced the appointment of Jeannine Senechal as the new director of compensation. Senechal is currently the associate director of the Human Resources Administration at the University of Washington. The UA Press

While the directory is published once a year, the online directory is updated when new information is submitted. James Ruppert, CLA, and Jack Bernet, CLA emeritus, recently published "Our Voices: Native Stories from Alaska and the Yukon" representing the work of 20 Native storytellers and writers from various Athabascan groups. Each student completed 450 hours of training and education in a variety of topics allowing them to receive the Alaska Police Standards Certification. scoreboardMatt Emmons, UAF rifle, finished fifth in prone rifle competition at the 2001 World Cup Finals held in Munich, Germany. Sigrid Aas, UAF cross-country running, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Runner of the Week after winning the Birch Hill Invitational womens 5k race in 19 minutes 40 seconds. She beat that performance by winning the Palmer Invitational the following week in 19 minutes 13 seconds. deadlinesSept. 21, 2001: Deadline for faculty and staff to submit an electronic copy of their proposal to the Technology Advisory Board. The TAB is accepting proposals for the Innovative Technology and Education and the Departmental/Specific Use Lab Support grants. Students may also submit proposals with a deadline of Sept. 28.
