The Big Test is Coming!

Around our university community it's not unusual to hear students lament about their dread of the upcoming "big test." We've all been there. Uhggh, the dread of it all.

But have we taken "the really big test" yet? I think one is scheduled for the next several months, perhaps years. It won't be a classic pencil and paper test administered in a classroom. It won't be easy to score. It won't be returned with a grade on it in just a day or two. Significant time will pass before we know whether we passed or failed. The "test" to which I'm referring is whether we can steadfastly apply the principles of freedom upon which America was built—principles that will be repeatedly tested during the "war on terrorism."

Universities have long been recognized as institutions that lead the charge for equality, religious freedom, freedom of speech and other fundamental beliefs that represent the essence of America. But lately it's disappointing that universities across our nation are rapidly becoming centers of hate speech and hate assaults; some estimates of such incidents approach 500 to date.

Perhaps assaults prompted by hate and fear in his home state of Texas encouraged President Bush to emphatically challenge Americans to resist unnecessary, unjustified retaliation and violence. In a recent Fairbanks Daily News-Miner letter to the editor, a Lathrop High School student, Joe Harris, warned, "If these attacks on innocent people…continue, then we are no better than the terrorist."

Teachers know that a basic premise of effective instruction is to set expectations at a high, challenging level for students. In many cases, students will rise to meet the established standard. In our current case of living history, the challenge is significant; the standard is high. Can we pass the test? The teacher in me says, "yes." The Nanook in me says, "yes." The American in me says, "ABSOLUTELY!"
