The University of Alaska has received a grant totaling $6 million over three years for biomedical research in Alaska. The grant is funded through the Institutional Development Award Program of the National Institutes of Health and will be used to create the Alaska Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) linking UAF, UAA and other institutions in the state. Funds will also provide for a faculty research position at UAF and one at UAA. The Butrovich Building is undergoing renovation of the general counsel suite to provide needed office space in the president's office for recently hired associate vice president Karen Perdue. The renovation is scheduled for completion by the end of November. Other improvement projects are underway throughout campus. The Alaska Quaternary Center's (AQC) administrative home is being transferred from the UA Museum to UAF's department of Geology and Geophysics in the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. UAF's Tanana Valley Campus is now offering the nationally-accredited Certified Public Manager (CPM) program. Dress up as your favorite dead writer, read from his or her works for up to three minutes, and take a chance at winning two round-trip Alaska Airline tickets. Theatre UAF presents "Fornes x2" consisting of "Successful Life of 3" and "Mud," two works by Maria Irene Fornes, Oct. 26 - Nov. 3 at 8:15 p.m. and Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre. Each is a mature one-act play which explores human relationships from a feminine perspective. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for UAF employees, alumni, seniors and military or $6 for students. UAF was
represented by both KSUA and KUAC at the Alaska Broadcasters Association
conference. At the conference KSUA won nine awards.
Matt Emmons, UAF rifle team, swept the competition while shooting for the U.S. at the Championships of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga. Emmons won the gold in air rifle, prone rifle and three-position rifle. The championships are held every four years and feature the top competitors from North, South and Central America. Nov. 2, 2001: Deadline for faculty and student initiated withdrawals. After Nov. 2, students will received a "W" grade on their transcripts for a course if they withdraw. Robert Hoover, president of the University of Idaho and chair of the Commission on Colleges and Universities site visit team for UAF, issued preliminary findings at an open assembly Oct. 10 in Wood Center which was provided to rural sites by audioconference and live web streaming. Representing the 12-member team, Hoover praised UAF for its comprehensive and candid self-study; he said UAF coped well with the challenges of the 1990s and the UAF community is infused with a growing optimism and new spirit. He said UAF's self-study should serve as a "beacon for strategic planning" at UAF in the coming years.
Hoover outlined five commendations likely to be in the final report: 1) progress on deferred maintenance; 2) assessment of the core curriculum; 3) research and instruction sharing equipment, labs and faculty; 4) planning; and 5) integration of research and instructional programs. The site visit team made the following recommendations:
The evaluation team will provide a written preliminary report by the end of October. After a comment period and final changes to the report if necessary, the commission will present its findings on reaffirmation of UAF's accreditation Dec. 13, 2001. For more information
