Progressive Organizations Progressive organizations are utilizing creative options to attract, retain and enhance their work forces. UAF is no exception! We now have programs designed to strengthen the work skills of staff, establish career paths and develop opportunities for career growth. The first project is managed by Human Resources and provides on-going skills-based training focused on the essential functions within staff members' job descriptions. Recognizing that the successful employee requires continuous training to learn and maintain his or her abilities, HR is providing workshops and special training sessions to provide hands-on learning. The sessions are open to employees whose primary responsibilities include activities such as personnel recruitment, personnel actions, travel and payroll processing. In the past, participation has been limited to Fairbanks-based employees. But in October, HR brought in two employees from each rural campus to participate in a three-day conference designed around their specific needs and challenges. In preparations for the event, the HR staff requested and received input to design the session to meet rural sites' requests for particular training sessions. The second project underway is UAF's participation in the statewide Professional Development Initiative pilot program. The initiative focuses on the programs entitled "Career Power, A Guide for Individual Development Planning" and "Career Power for Coaches, A Guide to Supporting Individual Development Planning," and will involve the statewide employees and pilot groups from the other three MAUs. At UAF, the pilot group involves the Human Resources staff and employees from Procurement and Contract Services, Printing Services, Polar Express, Central Receiving, Parking Services and the UAF Technology Center. The pilot group has begun the actual Career Power Program with additional departments and organizations to be added throughout the next year. Watch the Cornerstone and HR newsletter for more information as we further implement this project. |
