Now the Work Begins

The accreditation process is over. Or is it? While there is no doubt in my mind that institutional accreditation is assured, we will have to wait for official action by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges on December 13 before we know the details.

However, we didn't need the site visit to turn our self-study into a useful exercise. Our own critical self-evaluation has provided us with an outline for immediate improvement of UAF. Our challenge is to put it to use.

Based on the self-study, I have developed a personal "to do" list that consists of a couple dozen items. For the time being I would like to highlight three of them that I think will require the involvement of most of the UAF community: (1) continued development of an integrated planning and budgeting process; (2) implementation of realistic, useful outcomes assessment programs; and (3) better integration of the College of Rural Alaska into UAF planning and programming.

There are no quick fixes for these challenges, but there is no doubt that sustained efforts on these fronts will lead to significant institutional improvement. I urge each of you to begin thinking about ways in which we can make headway on each of these and to begin preparing to join campus-wide efforts to achieve our objectives. For more information on UAF's accreditation visit http://www.uaf.edu/provost/accreditation/.
