enhancing enrollment management
by Carla Kirts

UAF migrated from an admissions based recruitment program to an integrated enrollment management effort about five years ago. Enrollment management involves the entire university community and focuses not only on recruitment but also on supporting student success (retention). The admissions office and University Relations have collaborated to lead the effort. Enrollment, particularly of first time freshmen (the foundation of the student body), has improved.

In 1998, UAF hired its first director of enrollment, who also doubled as the director of the admissions office. The director developed and implemented UAF’s first enrollment management plan, improved the application process, and directly involved academic deans and academic departments in recruitment endeavors. When the director position was vacated, a review indicated that the momentum of the effort should not be merely maintained but enhanced. Thus, Chancellor Lind created a dean-level position to provide enrollment leadership for UAF.

As such, UAF is hiring its first Dean of Enrollment Management. The Dean will report to the Provost and serve on the Chancellor’s Cabinet. In addition, the Dean will be responsible for administering four departments which are integrally involved in the enrollment experience for students: admissions, records, financial aid, and academic advising.

An update on enrollment management will be presented at the Chancellor’s Summit later this month. If all goes as expected, an announcement of who will fill the Dean position will be made at that time. UAF continues to be committed to effective enrollment management and will continue to enhance the effort. Expanding enrollment efforts to include community campuses and graduate studies are high priorities for the coming year.
