Dr. William Ransom Wood, the University of Alaska's fourth president,
was remembered at a memorial service held in the Patty Center March 3.
The venue was especially appropriate since Wood presided over the first
commencement held there in 1963. The gymnasium shook as Wood received military
honors and a salute with the firing of howitzers followed by the playing
of taps. A reception at Wood Center allowed those who knew him to share
their memories with each other and on video tape which will be edited for
the family. He was also remembered at UAF basketball and hockey contests
held March 3. Dr. Wood died on Feb. 25 at the age of 94.

institutional accreditation
Accreditation Standards
Draft responses to each of the nine accreditation standards are now
available on-line for comment at http://www.uaf.edu/provost/accreditation/draft/.
An introduction and college and school sections will be added in the next
few weeks. All UAF units and constituents are encouraged to provide feedback
on the draft self-study. The self-study should represent all of UAF. Your
participation in this stage of the review process is very important and
your feedback is critical. In particular, we are asking for comments on
controversial issues, omissions, and errors in fact.
We hope that this draft, warts and all, will spark discussion. Each
page of the self-study draft includes a link to a feedback page for comments,
and all comments appear on the web as well. Please reference the page number
in your comments so we know which paragraph you are addressing. The deadline
for review of this draft isMarch 21, 2001. A revised draft will be available
for review in April and an open forum is being planned to provide an opportunity
for the UAF community to give additional feedback.
Over the next two months Accreditation Steering Committee members will
be meeting with faculty, staff, and student governance groups to receive
their suggestions for revisions. In addition, committee members will be
visiting rural campuses to seek input from faculty, staff and students.
For more information concerning UAF's self-study process visit http://www.uaf.edu/provost/accreditation/
or contact accreditation steering committee co-chairs Ron Gatterdam at
