UAF Construction Update

With more than $ 50 million in construction underway over the next two years there are going to be many visible changes on the Fairbanks campus. In order to have a staging area for materials and crews working on the $18.6 million Rasmuson Library renewal project and the $5.6 million Brooks Building renovation, the Duckering parking lot will remain closed through the summer of 2002 when the Brooks Building renovation is expected to be completed.

You may have noticed the chain link fence in front of Signers' Hall. It blocks off half of the visitors lot and will impact students during registration and fee payment this fall. Please encourage visitors, friends, colleagues and students to bear with us as we make progress toward addressing a long list of deferred maintenance needs. The end result will be worth it.

An example is the $13 million Duckering Building that will reopen this fall as a modern engineering center, home to all of UAF's engineering instructional and research programs. The co-location of the five departments, and the Institute of Northern Engineering, the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory and the Petroleum Development Laboratory, will provide exciting opportunities for collaboration between students and faculty associated with these programs. Modern communication systems, smart classrooms and more than $750,000 of new equipment will provide the necessary infrastructure for 21st century engineering at UAF.
