from Marshall Lind
Welcome Back
The state's largest newspaper editorialized earlier this month on the
future of the University of Alaska. The Jan. 5 Anchorage Daily News editorial
stated "Magnificent describes the potential for higher education in Alaska."
We have already started building a stronger university. Our academic and
strategic planning documents have outlined what the Anchorage Daily News
editorial has suggested to help the University reach its potential. We
are creating clear measures of our success so we are accountable for our
actions, setting standards of excellence and seizing opportunities
to enhance specific programs so they are truly world class.
Over the next few months you'll be hearing a lot about UAF's academic
plan and initiatives. Provost Reichardt has worked very hard this past
semester with deans and directors to develop this planning tool. UAF now
has an academic platform from which will spring any initiative or budgetary
decision, rather than budget processes driving academic programs or needs.
Following an academic planning retreat in December, more than 180 planning
initiatives were presented. From those discussions, seven target areas
upon which UAF will concentrate its efforts over the next several years
were identified. These areas of emphasis are: Arts and Humanities, Economic
Development, Environmental and Human Science, Renewable Natural Resources
and Teacher Preparation. This does not imply they are UAF's best or most
important programs. They are, however, areas where judicious enhancements
in the near future are likely to have the best potential for moving UAF
toward our strategic planning goals.
As we begin the spring semester, I want to not only welcome faculty
and staff back for the second half of the academic year, but also thank
you for your contributions creating university support throughout the state.
This momentum will only continue throughout the spring as we develop measurements
to track our progress toward meeting the goals in the Strategic
Plan - UAF 2005 and continue to build a stronger university.
