Employer of Choice
For the University of Alaska Fairbanks to be recognized as the "employer
of choice" in Alaska, we want to enhance opportunities for employees. Advancing
your skills and knowledge will keep you current in your job and help prepare
you for a career at UAF.
A comprehensive career development program recognizes that employees
enter and progress on their career path from different vantage points.
An assessment of work skills and abilities is used to tailor an initial
training plan. An effective training and development program continues
by presenting topical and pertinent training that maintains and improves
technical skills, operational navigation within the system and organizational
knowledge necessary for job satisfaction. Then, with the counsel and assistance
of supervisors and UAF Human Resources personnel, a program of workshops
and courses can be designed to prepare the employee for advancement toward
the job they seek at UAF. This kind of career development program is becoming
one of the major HR initiatives for me and for your UAF HR colleagues.
UAF HR recently launched a part of this new training and development
emphasis called "Fundamentals in Supervision" (FIS). FIS provides mandatory
training on Awareness and Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Providing a
Drug Free Workplace, Performance Management, Coaching and Mentoring and
other sessions to enhance the skills of new, current and potential supervisors
that are critical to our success. Participants who complete the 16-hour
program within three years receive supervisory certification, beneficial
for promotion and professional growth.
In addition to FIS, UAF HR provides training opportunities designed
to benefit the changing needs of employees in areas such as business letter
writing, managing stress, and technical training for personnel and payroll
assistants. For information on these programs and others, contact
UAF Human Resources at 7700 or visit them on line at http://www.uaf.edu/uafhr/.
