Adapting and Applying Knowledge

Last fall "911" took on a double meaning for Americans. Much has been said and written about how our lives were changed forever on September 11, 2001. I have been amazed at how much this tragedy and subsequent events have influenced the thinking of leaders in higher education. I suspect many of their thoughts and proposals will come and go, but I do believe that the events of 9.11 and their aftermath highlight our greatest responsibility in contemporary education – to assist our students in preparing for a life characterized by unpredictable changes.

Think of the challenges posed to our students by the following: the disappearance of "dot coms" that seemed to offer endless employment opportunities, the bankruptcy of one of the world's largest energy corporations, the symbolic and strategic importance of Kandahar (how many of us could even spell it three months ago?).

What does all this have to say about our obligations as educators? I think it means we must place increased emphasis on our efforts to focus on what our graduates are able to do. Factual knowledge is important, but as we have seen, the really important facts change. The outcome we must seek for our graduates is an ability to adapt and apply what they know to new and changing situations. That's an important idea to keep in mind as we begin our cycle of program reviews and as we revise our curricula.
