under constructionThe stairs and sidewalk from the Taku parking lot will be
closed from Aug. 7 - 20. Please follow posted signs across Taku and
up the trail. Motorists are advised to watch out for pedestrians crossing
at the Taku entrance. Shuttle bus service is available from the Nenana
Lot to the Eielson Building and by request at 322-4302. A new,
safer sidewalk will be built from the parking lot to Tanana Loop and
into the core of campus. The sidewalk will feature a handrail and
will follow natural paths of traffic from the lower parking lots.
The current Taku lot exit will be demolished and a new driveway installed
on the east side of the lot. A new bus shelter will be located on
the south side of the parking lot. for your informationUAF and the Arctic Region Super-computing
Center (ARSC) have entered into a partnership with the
Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in Seattle, which allows cross-institute
faculty appointments and sharing of information and technology. The partnership
will broaden the scope of research being conducted at ARSC. ISB and ARSC
are linked by the Pacific Northwest Gigapop network allowing them to easily
and quickly share information. UAF elementary education major Lisa Villano has been appointed
by Gov. Tony Knowles as the student commissioner to the Alaska Postsecondary
Education Commission. She will serve a two-year term. Villano is a coordinator
for the UA Coalition of Student Leaders and has served as an ASUAF senator. UAF recently signed a licensing agreement for the production of
reindeer and musk ox food with Ken Sherwood of Alaska Garden and Pet Supply.
The food is the result of research by Perry Barboza and John Blake,
IAB and Department of Biology
and Wildlife, which included ways to provide cost-effective, reliable
feed and feeding standards for developing herds of musk ox to produce
qiviut. The Alaska Division of Emergency Services brought its earthquake
simulator, the "Quake Cottage," to Fairbanks as part of its
educational outreach for earthquake preparedness. UAF is one of five universities
in the nation participating in a pilot program in partnership with the
Federal Emergency Management Agency
to become a disaster resistant university. Paul Metz, SME, was elected Department Chair of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering. He will serve a two-year term through June 2003. Larry Dickerson recently returned to the College
of Rural Alaska, filling a newly created position with joint responsibilities
to CRA and Cooperative Extension
Service. Dickerson served as a UAF extension specialist in community
development for five years. Richard Carr, CLA, recently
delivered the paper "Voyages Out and Away From: The Narrative of
Escape in Australian and New Zealand Literature" at the Association
for the Study of Australian Literature conference held in Melbourne, Australia. Frank Soos, CLA, was recently
awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA).
He will join nearly 20 other fellows at the retreat for visual artists,
writers and composers. For more information about VCCA visit http://www.vcca.com. The School of Fisheries and Ocean
Sciences (SFOS) received more than $5 million during June and
July 2001 from a variety of private and government sources. SFOS recently
added a new multi-media website devoted to an ongoing study on the impact
of bottom trawling on the Bering Sea at http://www.sfos.uaf.edu. The 20th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium, "Genetics
of Subpolar Fish and Invertebrates," is accepting abstracts for presentations.
