What's New?
From Paul Reichardt

The start of a new academic year is always an exciting time for me. However, this year it seems I have an unusual number of things to be excited about.
While the inconvenience of construction may not excite you, the reasons for the mess should. The return of the Duckering Building to service as UAF's engineering center is a key step in our revitalization of both campus facilities and our programs. Just getting underway is the renovation of the Rasmuson Library. The Brooks Building project is not far behind. To the west you will find construction activity aimed at making Yukon Drive a more efficient route for both pedestrians and auto traffic and we anticipate construction of the striking Museum addition to begin next spring.
On the program front, we also have many exciting new developments. This fall we are welcoming students into nine new degree programs ranging from an AAS in Process Technology to a BS/MS in Computer Science. Our curricular offerings are also being expanded with three new certificate programs and one new option for a minor. Our research and graduate programs will be enhanced with the return of the Agricultural Research Service to the Fairbanks campus, by our participation in the FAA Center of Excellence for General Aviation and by the establishment of the Department of Energy's Arctic Energy Center at UAF.
In addition to these formal enhancements, we are enriching the overall academic environment at UAF through a host of new endeavors. Wise investment of Title III funds has dramatically improved student services at our rural campuses. Financial support from the Northern Momentum Teacher/Scholar program has attracted a Pulitzer Prize-winning Native American author, an expert on Saami law and politics and a Special Adviser to the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as visiting scholars.
