from Paul Reichardt

Let's Celebrate

Recently I've been thinking that this academic year seems like a blur because of my frenetic work schedule. However, the other day a faculty member put it all in perspective for me when he said, "You know, it's fun again to work around here." It made me pause. Yes, it's been a lot of work this year for me as well as for the rest of UAF's staff and faculty; but the pace has picked up because of new opportunities for growth and development. There's a new atmosphere of excitement and optimism at UAF, and I think we should take the end of the academic year and commencement weekend to celebrate.

As you think about what you have to celebrate, let me give you a few ideas to get started. We have a great graduating class, including a number of undergraduates who have won prestigious graduate fellowships and as many as 27 students who will earn a Ph.D. Our student athletes have raised their collective GPA, and the rifle team brought back its third consecutive national championship. Representatives from the team that manages our Student Investment Fund were featured on CNBC.

Several faculty members appeared in the national and international media to present their work on global climate change, and others were recognized by awards including election as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Infusion of new funds allowed us to hire more new faculty and staff than in any other year in recent history, to purchase more than $2 million worth of new instructional and research equipment, and to watch the Duckering Building undergo conversion to a modern engineering facility. UAF groups and projects ranging from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society Chapter to UAF's TV ad campaign won national awards.

It's been a great year. Take a bit of time to celebrate. You deserve it!
