Come to UAF and See the World

Our admissions office is working hard to attract and keep students. While fall 1999 opening enrollment is down at the Fairbanks campus by 1.7 percent (and down 1.8 percent for the entire MAU, including Fairbanks and branch campuses) from fall 1998, there is good reason to be optimistic. When you consider that enrollment declined 8.6 percent at the MAU level just one year ago, from 9,012 to 8,235, this fall's slight decline is good news. Even better news is that enrollment of all types of new students-first-time freshman, classic first-time freshmen, transfer students and first-time graduate students-is up from last fall. After a steady period of decline roughly paralleling our overall enrollment decline from 9,416 students in 1994 to 8,235 in 1998, enrollment of first-time freshmen increased 3.5 percent, classic first-time freshmen 7 percent, and first-time graduate students 21.3 percent. Our final enrollment for fall 1999 won't be available until after the first of the year, but early indications are that we will come out near our overall fall 1998 student enrollment. And that's with enrollment declines at local high schools.

Recruiting and retention are everyone's business at UAF. We all have a part in making the student experience a memorable one. I've said it before, and study after study supports the fact, that students who attend college in Alaska tend to stay here after graduation to live, work and raise families. As our students prepare to leave UAF for the holiday break, remember you can have a positive impact on whether those students decide to come back in the spring.

We will continue to focus on our strengths at UAF. Our institution is an undisputed leader in the study of science of the Far North. We will also address the concerns we hear from students and parents about wanting opportunities to experience life outside Alaska. Watch for UAF's new campaign promoting domestic and international student exchange programs. We'll be encouraging students to "Come to UAF and See the World." For the price of UAF tuition or residency tuition at a school in another state or country, students have an opportunity to experience academic diversification and different climates, cultures and geography. Plus, as an exchange student, they'll have a chance to judge for themselves what a great education UAF offers at an affordable price, with opportunities here that are available noplace else in the world.
