Before he passed away last June, Kubon enjoyed a mining career that spanned goldfields from California to Nome, but he never forgot his Fairbanks roots. His donation will establish an endowment to provide scholarships to students in UAF's School of Mineral Engineering.

Institutional Accreditation - An Update

Not quite a year ago, I used this column to alert the UAF community to our institutional accreditation process, which will culminate with a site visit in Fall 2001. Although that sounds like an event in the distant future, people have already been hard at work getting our self-study started. Dr. Dana Thomas is coordinating our effort, and has implemented the process that will produce our self-study report. We are now entering the phase when our efforts will involve the entire UAF community. Over the next couple of weeks we will appoint our steering committee, and host Larry Stevens from the Commission of Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges on Nov. 29. Larry will assist us in getting our collective effort off to a good start. I ask each of you to prepare for this process by doing some homework. The key question we must answer is, "Do we actually do what we say we do?" We want to answer this question truthfully, so that, in addition to highlighting our successes, we can use the self-study to get back on track if we have strayed. I suggest we start by reviewing "what we say we do." There are two documents essential to defining our intent: the UAF Mission Statement and the Strategic Plan: UAF 2000. Both can be accessed online at: http://www.uaf.edu/strategic/2000/.  Please study these documents and be prepared to fully engage in the analysis and discourse that leads to our self-study document and accreditation effort.
