Headlines

Chancellor Rogers hosts fall convocation Thursday, Sept. 9, from 1 – 2 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The theme will be "Learning from the Past, Preparing for the Future." An ice cream social in the Great Hall and at each of the rural campuses will take place afterwards. The event will also be webcast and archived for those who can't be there in person.

Mark Myers, alumnus, has been named the new vice chancellor for research at UAF. Myers, currently the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act coordinator, will begin his duties Jan. 24, 2011.




 

For Your Information

The UA system is undergoing a review of its current condition, including opportunities, challenges, strengths and limitations. A review team, funded by the Rasmuson Foundation, is in Alaska Sept. 6 – 10 to conduct the review, including interviews and group discussions.

Matthew Cronin, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, was reappointed to the Board of Forestry by Gov. Sean Parnell.

Andrew Seitz, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, is the project leader of a project to study the effects on fish of an in-stream power-generating turbine set up by Alaska Power and Telephone in the Yukon River near Eagle, AK. Preliminary results show that very few fish are passing through the turbine, and those that do are not showing signs of injury.

Siri Tuttle, Alaska Native Language Center and Linguistics, will be the keynote speaker at the Humanities of the Lesser Known conference Sept. 10 – 11 at Lund University in Sweden.

UAF has established the Ocean Acidification Research Center dedicated to studying ocean acidification in Alaska. Jeremy Mathis, Institute of Marine Science, is the center's director.

The Research Experience for Undergraduates in Atmospheric Sciences program, led by researchers from the Geophysical Institute, hosted six students this summer. The program was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation which provides funding through 2012.

The UAF Weekly Science Calendar has moved to Google Calendar. E-mail subscribers will now receive a weekly e-mail with a direct link to a PDF of the calendar for the following week.

The Office of Information Technology Training and Development Group is developing a series of how-to classes for Adobe CS5 and would like input to help guide the content of these courses. A brief questionnaire is available online.

The World Health Organization declared an end to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic globally in August. However, the 2009 H1N1 viruses and seasonal influenza viruses continue to circulate in many parts of the world and the CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccination to protect against the flu. The U.S. 2010-2011 seasonal influenza vaccine is expected to protect against an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus, and the 2009 H1N1 virus that emerged last year.

The Patty Ice Arena hosts Learn to Skate classes Oct. 4 – Dec. 16 with beginning level classes Monday and Wednesday and advanced classes Tuesday and Thursday; all from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Instructor permission is required for admission in the advanced class. Facilities Services has begun work on the Skarland Hall restroom remodel project. The project is scheduled for substantial completion by Feb. 22, 2011.

The utilities waste line repairs project phase two work continues along Tanana Loop and is scheduled to be complete by Sept. 30.




 

Events

In a Time of Change: Envisioning the Future (PDF), a visual and performance art series presented by the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research Program and the Fairbanks Arts Association, takes place Sept. 3 – 25 at the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts in Pioneer Park. The visual arts exhibit is hosted in the Bear Gallery through Sept. 25. The performance art programs featuring various music and dance ensembles take place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 – 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts theater; admission is free. A reception in the Bear Gallery will follow both performances. A modern dance performance, Perspectives, including two works by Deliquescent Designs inspired by Alaska climate change, takes place Sunday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts theater. Weight Watchers will hold an informational meeting on campus from noon – 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the vice chancellor’s conference room in the Administrative Services Center on College Rd. The UAF Alumni Association is hosting its reunion weekend, honoring the classes of 1960 and 1985, Thursday – Saturday, Sept. 23 – 25. The reunion luncheon will be Sept. 24 at 11:30 a.m. at the Princess Riverside Lodge, and the UAF Athletic Hall of Fame brunch will be Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. The Office of Information Technology hosts training opportunities throughout the year and has walk-in sessions most Fridays. A full training calendar is available online.
