The UA Board of Regents met in Juneau Sept. 23 - 24. The board decided to maintain the original 2011 - 2012 tuition costs, without an additional increase, and delayed action on the 2012 - 2013 rate until November. The board also approved schematic designs for the fourth phase of the ongoing renovation of UAF’s Community and Technical College, formerly the old Fairbanks court building downtown. The fourth phase, at $4.8 million, will renovate a significant portion of the building’s third floor. The next board of regents meeting is scheduled for Nov. 9 in Anchorage.

The UA Unmanned Aircraft Program, part of the Geophysical Institute and based at Poker Flat Research Range, was awarded up to $47 million by the U.S. Navy to test and evaluate payloads aboard small, unmanned aircraft.

UAF Community and Technical College's new associate of applied science degree in drafting technology was approved by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The degree combines course work in computer-aided drafting with instruction in building techniques and materials common to construction in Alaska.

The Keith B. Mather Library is the state's only patent and trademark depository library. The Mather library is designated by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office to receive and house copies of U.S. patent and trademark materials, make those materials available to the public and disseminate patent and trademark information. Library staff can also assist community members by conducting searches of existing patents and trademarks, and provide resources for registering new trademarks and applying for patents.

The search for a new College of Natural Science and Mathematics dean has begun. The job posting is available online, applications are being accepted and the initial applicant review begins Oct. 18. UAF will once again be recycling mixed paper and cardboard. Collected paper will be taken to K & K Recycling, Inc., to be burned cleanly to generate electricity. A kick off barbecue will take place in front of Wood Center Thursday, Sept. 30 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. All students, faculty and staff are invited; please bring your PolarExpress card. Nicole Mölders, College of Natural Science and Mathematics and Geophysical Institute, was appointed by the American Meteorological Society to serve as a member of its Atmospheric Chemistry Committee. Her term runs January 2011 – January 2014.

Chuck Crapo, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, visited seafood processing plants in Wrangell, Petersburg and Juneau to help processors review seafood safety issues and assist in new product development.

The UAF Scenarios Network for Alaska Planning researchers, along with other scientists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Institute of Arctic Biology, authored a new report that examines how rapid climate change could affect Alaska’s wildlife and ecosystems. The publication is the culmination of a two-year effort to model future shifts in species and regional ecosystems. It offers policymakers and the public a practical way to approach the question of climate change effects on Alaska ecosystems.

The UAF Community and Technical College Culinary Arts and Hospitality program is offering non-credit workshops (PDF) on appetizers and desserts.  For more information call 455-2902.

, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, with UAF engineer Rich Weis and UAF student Dalton Ellingson, conducted energy audits of Ocean Beauty Seafoods and Copper River Seafoods in Cordova. The audits were conducted as part of a two-year MAP project to help Alaska seafood processing plants improve their energy efficiency. The project received funds from the Alaska Energy Authority.

You can use your employee tuition waiver to pay for workshops listed on the UA-approved non-credit classes list. The UA Press recently published Arctic Sanctuary: Images of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with photographs by Jeff Jones and essays by Laurie Hoyle, and Ice Floe: New and Selected Poems edited by Shannon Gramse and Sarah Kirk.

The Borealis Bistro is undergoing some changes and is not open this semester; it will reopen in the spring. The Culinary Arts program is also seeking accreditation from the American Culinary Federation.

UAF Community and Technical College dental hygiene students are now seeing patients in CTC's state-of-the-art dental clinic at 604 Barnette St. All procedures are completed under the supervision of licensed dentists and costs are reduced. To make an appointment call 455-2805.

The UA Health in Action program hosts fitness activities to help you stay active throughout the year, including Tai Chi. Register online, class size is limited.

The 2010 Farthest North Forest Sports Festival takes place Saturday, Oct. 2, beginning at 9 a.m. with events held in the Fairbanks Experiment Farm fields and at Ballaine Lake. The festival is sponsored by the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences and the Resource Management Society.

Chena Fest, a fundraiser for Alaska Future Farmers of America, takes place Saturday, Oct. 2, at 5:30 p.m. at Chena Hot Springs Resort. The Arctic Chamber Orchestra presents the season opening concert featuring violin soloist Olivier Fluchaire, directed by Eduard Zilberkant, Sunday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Admission is $30 adults, $25 seniors or military and $10 for students or children.

The Patty Ice Arena hosts Learn to Skate classes Oct. 4 – Dec. 16 with beginning level classes Monday and Wednesday and advanced classes Tuesday and Thursday; all from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Instructor permission is required for admission in the advanced class. Anita Madison, University Employee Assistance Program provider ComPsych, presents free training sessions that are open to all University of Alaska employees. The sessions last 60 - 90 minutes. The Department of Social Work, the National Association of Social Workers Alaska Chapter and the Alaska Counseling Association present "An Evening With Patch Adams: Humor and Health," Wednesday, Oct. 6  in Davis Concert Hall beginning with a welcome dance by the Inu Yupiaq dancers at 6:40. The UA Health In Action program is hosting a flu shot clinic Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Akasofu Building lobby. This year's flu shot is a combination vaccine for seasonal flu and H1N1. The cost is $25 and payments must be made via cash or check. Vaccinations will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary. The clinic is presented by WIN for Alaska and Carrs Safeway.

Discover UAF: Inside Out, hosted by the Office of Admissions, takes place Friday, Oct. 15, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Inside Out is an open house for high school juniors and seniors designed to showcase the university. Registration is required, but the event is free.

KUAC FM is hosting its fall fundraiser Oct. 16 – 24 and is seeking volunteers to answer phones. For more information call 474-1890 or e-mail volunteers@kuac.org.

The University Women's Association recently donated $1,000 to the Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School.  Check out the latest edition of the UAF Aurora magazine to read a feature article about the school.




 

Nanook women's volleyball player Tereza Bendlova was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Nanook hockey faces Windsor in an exhibition game Thursday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center ice arena.

The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – volleyball vs. Western Washington, 1-3, and vs. Simon Fraser, 2-3; hockey Blue vs. Gold, 2-3, Gold . Away games – men's cross country and women's cross country vs. Chaminade, men's 2nd place, women's 2nd place.
