The UAF Center for Alaska Native Health Research is conducting a study on how the genetics and diet of Yup'ik Eskimos affect the blood-thinning properties of a common drug used by heart and stroke patients. The study is part of a $1.02 million National Institutes of Health sub-award and could lead to more effective drug prescriptions.

UAF Community and Technical College dental hygiene students are now seeing patients in CTC's state-of-the-art dental clinic at 604 Barnette St. All procedures are completed under the supervision of licensed dentists and costs are reduced. To make an appointment call 455-2805.
Facilities Services has discontinued the Community Request program due to budgetary concerns. The program provided FS services to campus and public organizations free of charge at the discretion of Facilities Services and the associate vice chancellor for facilities and safety.
UAF's editorial style guide is used for official UAF publications and websites and is available online. Use of this guide is recommended for consistency of style in university publications.
Reid Brewer, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program agent in Unalaska, was an instructor at the Qawalangin Tribe culture camp, where he taught lessons on marine safety and survival, intertidal subsistence foods, and marine mammal anatomy and ecology to 65 children and 20 adults.
Torie Baker, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program agent in Cordova, met with Louisiana Cooperative Extension personnel and Mississippi shellfish researchers, who came to Alaska to learn about the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Transportation Services has university vehicles available for rent on an hourly or daily basis. Vehicles are available on short notice, including one stationed on West Ridge, in the Elvey parking lot. The Cooperative Extension Service office in Anchorage is moving. The old office closed Sept. 30, the new location in the Kaloa Building at 1675 C Street will open Oct. 5. CES will host a public open house Saturday, Oct. 30. For more information contact the CES Anchorage office at 907-786-6300.
The Alaska Sea Grant Bookstore now offers the Field Guide to Seaweeds of Alaska by Mandy Lindeberg and Sandra Lindstrom. The book is the only field guide to more than 100 common seaweeds, seagrasses and marine lichens of Alaska.
Regional retirement counselor Pamela Couzin, State of Alaska Division of Retirement and Benefits, will be on campus the week of Nov. 15 – 19 providing individual retirement counseling appointments and two evening sessions on the retirement process. Individual sessions are scheduled by appointment only and fill up very quickly, call UAF HR at 474-7700 to schedule your session. Contact the Division of Retirement and Benefits at 1-800-821-2251 to request a retirement projections prior to your session. The PERS retirement process evening session takes place Wednesday, Nov. 17, and the TRS retirement process evening session takes place Thursday, Nov. 18; both session are at 6 p.m. in the media classroom, 340 Rasmuson Library. Registration is required, enroll for either session at the links provided.

Drive Safely Work Week, a workplace safety campaign designed to remind employees about safe driving practices, is Oct. 4 – 8. The theme this year focuses on the dangers of distracted driving, particularly the use of cell phones and texting while driving.
The Patty Ice Arena hosts Learn to Skate classes Oct. 4 – Dec. 16 with beginning level classes Monday and Wednesday and advanced classes Tuesday and Thursday; all from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Instructor permission is required for admission in the advanced class. Anita Madison, University Employee Assistance Program provider ComPsych, presents free training sessions that are open to all University of Alaska employees. The sessions last 60 - 90 minutes. The UA Health In Action program is hosting a flu shot clinic Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Akasofu Building lobby. This year's flu shot is a combination vaccine for seasonal flu and H1N1. The cost is $25 and payments must be made via cash or check. Vaccinations will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary. The clinic is presented by WIN for Alaska and Carrs Safeway.

Ann Ringstad, director of community advocacy, received the 2010 North Star Award from the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce. The North Star Award is given to an individual or organization in Alaska, who through a special project, action or concern, developed or pursued the endeavor for the betterment of all Alaska residents.
Alaska Sea Grant received a donation from Santa Monica Seafood for research programs aimed at rebuilding Alaska's collapsed red and king crab stocks. The money will be used to support research being done by the Alaska King Crab Reserach, Rehabilitation and Biology Program.
Three new federal and state grants totaling over $1 million will be used by Alaska Sea Grant to establish a statewide network of citizen scientists to track the spread of marine invasive species, conduct an instruction and training program aimed at jump-starting the shellfish farming industry and launch an effort to collect better information about marine mammals that strand on Alaska's coast.
