UA is implementing a new cell phone policy effective Nov. 1. The university will no longer provide cell phones or directly pay cell phone providers for cell phones for university employees. Instead, the university will provide a taxable stipend to qualified employees to offset the business use of their personal cell phones ($30/month for voice or $65/month for voice/data). Detailed information on the new policy is available online.
UAF’s 2010 United Way campaign is under way. Human Resources is distributing contribution forms. When you return a completed United Way form to UAF HR, your name will be entered into a pool for a drawing to take place at noon Wednesday, Nov. 3.
Flora Grabowska was recently named the new librarian and research assistant professor at the Geophysical Institute's Keith B. Mather Library.
The Regents Recap for the UA Board of Regents Sept. 23 – 24 meeting is now available online. The board's next meeting will be in Anchorage Tuesday, Nov. 9, for budget approval.
The UAF Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the UAF Women’s Center and the UAF Committee on the Status of Women invite faculty, lecturers and instructors from any UAF unit to submit a paper proposal for our biannual Women’s and Gender Studies panel, “Where Are the Women?,” to be held in December. The purpose of the panel is to examine UAF institutional practices related to the employment, retention and promotion of women faculty, lecturers and instructors. Each speaker will offer a five-minute opening presentation and then will engage in discussion with the audience and the other panelists. Please submit a 250-word abstract of your presentation by Friday, Nov. 5, to tsyork@alaska.edu.
Wood Center has digital screens which can be used to advertise events. An ad can be displayed on the large screens for free but the content must not be a personal ad or advertise off-campus activities, and it must be digital screen-ready. The UAF National Student Exchange program program information meetings are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:05 p.m. in 113 Eielson, beginning Nov. 2. The UA Health In Action program is hosting a flu shot clinic Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in 212-A Butrovich Building. This year's flu shot is a combination vaccine for seasonal flu and H1N1. The cost is $25 and payments must be made via cash or check. Vaccinations will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary. The clinic is presented by WIN for Alaska and Carrs Safeway.
The UAF Natural Resources, Fisheries and Sciences Career Day, hosted by Career Services, takes place Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Wood Center. Lindeberg will sign copies of her new book, Field Guide to Alaska Seaweeds, published by Alaska Sea Grant.

The Office of Faculty Development will host Professor Eric Mazur, Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University, for a series of lectures and workshops on campus Oct. 28 and 29. Celebrate Halloween at the UA Museum of the North Friday, Oct. 29, from 4 – 7 p.m. Children 12 and under, along with a supervising adult, are invited to see bats, birds, bugs and more in the museum's research labs.
