UA is implementing a new cell phone policy effective Nov. 1. The university will no longer provide cell phones or directly pay cell phone providers for cell phones for university employees. Instead, the university will provide a taxable stipend to qualified employees to offset the business use of their personal cell phones ($30/month for voice or $65/month for voice/data). Detailed information on the new policy is available online.
UAF’s 2010 United Way campaign is under way. Human Resources is distributing contribution forms. Your department will be contacted to set up agency presentations for your unit, or you can contact co-chair Forrest Karr, Athletics and Campus Recreation, at 474-6812 or flkarr@alaska.edu prior to Oct. 22 to arrange for a brief presentation. When you return a completed United Way form to UAF HR, your name will be entered into a pool for a drawing to take place at noon Wednesday, Nov. 3.
Since Oct. 1 the UAF Sustainability program has diverted 12,920 pounds of would-be garbage from the landfill to K+K Recycling in North Pole, including 1,360 pounds of plastic. UAF recycled 7,380 pounds of paper during the second week of the paper and cardboard recycling program, an increase of 3,200 pounds since week one. Bert Boyer has been named director of the Center for Alaska Native Health Research within the Institute of Arctic Biology. Boyer has served as acting director since February. Ray RaLonde, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, taught aquaculture techniques in Ketchikan Oct. 11 –15 as part of a National Sea Grant/Alaska Sea Grant project to boost the number of oyster and other shellfish farms in Southeast Alaska.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy named Lawson Brigham, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, as its 2010 distinguished alumnus of the year, the highest honor bestowed by the academy. The award was presented by Rear Adm. Richard Larrabee, USCGA Alumni Association chairman of the board, at a ceremony at the academy in New London, Conn., last month.
A new Alaska Sea Grant SEAgram information bulletin by Greg Fisk, a fishing industry consultant based in Juneau, takes on the pros and cons of fishing vessel propulsion alternatives. The SEAgram is available as a free PDF download from the Alaska Sea Grant bookstore.
Mindy Krzykowski, a senior physics major in the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, received the best poster award at the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics in Lincoln, Neb. Krzykowski's presentation, “Identifying and characterizing VxB events from the Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SIDE) of the Apollo 14 Mission,” resulted from her work last summer in the Lunar and Planetary Science Academy at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, which was supported by the Alaska Space Grant program. Her travel to the conference was supported by grants from the vice chancellor for research and the CNSM student travel fund. Krzykowski has been an active member of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program throughout her time at UAF. The Alaska Center for Energy and Power will host a community lecture on “Preparing Your Home for Winter: Options for Residents and Businesses,” Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Blue Loon on the Parks Highway. Speakers will include experts from Alaska Energy Authority, Interior Weatherization, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center. Lindeberg will sign copies of her new book, Field Guide to Alaska Seaweeds, published by Alaska Sea Grant.
The Office of Faculty Development will host Professor Eric Mazur, Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University, for a series of lectures and workshops on campus Oct. 28 and 29.
