The UAF Police Department is using Nixle to send out safety and emergency information. Sign up for the service to receive emergency alerts via e-mail, cell phone texts or by logging in to your Nixle account. More information is available at the UAF on Alert website. The number to call for information about campus closures and other emergency information is still 474-7UAF (7823). In case of an emergency call 911.

Emerson Eads, a UAF music student, was selected as one of 10 people nationwide to participate in the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra conducting workshop.

The Wood Center Scheduling Office will be open limited hours during the holidays. If you anticipate event scheduling needs during the holiday break, submit your requests before Dec. 18 to fyroom@uaf.edu.

The Rasmuson Library's Alaska History Store is offering a 2011 calendar for $15.00. Proceeds support the preservation and access work that the archive staff provide.

UAF Mobile, UAF's free iPhone app, is available for download. UAF Mobile includes a campus and building map, news, directory search, shuttle tracker, ski trails and more. UAF offers seminars designed specifically for first-year students. First year seminars scheduled this spring semester include "Politics of Global Change." Students who complete the politics seminar will receive a $100 discount on their fall 2011 Residence Life bill. One seminar, "Your Mind and How to Use It," will be offered during  WINTERmester. Slips, trips and falls are the leading causes of accidents at UAF. As snow melts and refreezes, walkways can be extra slick. To avoid injury, be sure to have secure footing when getting in and out of your vehicle and wear proper footgear or ice grippers over your boots and shoes. Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management has spikies available free of charge to all UAF employees. Report areas of concern to Facilities Services at 474-7000.

A Freecycle Event organized by Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity takes place Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. Bring items you no longer want or need and trade for things you can use. For more information contact Brandon Meston at bsmeston@alaska.edu.

The Leadership, Involvement and Volunteer Experience program 2011 Alternative Spring Break trip will take place March 13 – 19. Participants will travel to Moab, Utah, to work with Plateau Restoration, a non-profit group working to protect and restore native habitats on the Colorado Plateau. The Cooperative Extension Service will host the annual Delta Harvest Wrap-up Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Delta Career Advancement Center. Area farmers will share observations of the past growing season and thoughts about research needs, and researchers will present information on current and future research projects.

A research panel on Pebble Mine, with an interdisciplinary panel of faculty and researchers, takes place Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. The panel will discuss how each approaches questions about the mine from his or her disciplinary perspective and how interdisciplinary approaches can be useful. Get a holiday health screening and enter to win a Nintendo® Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus Thursday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in 109 A and B Butrovich. The free health screening includes body composition analysis, blood pressure check, waist measurement and balance. Wellness consultants will be available to answer your health screening questions and provide information about the IHP program. Only UA staff and faculty are eligible to win, and must participate in the health screening in order to qualify. The prize drawing will be Dec. 3. This event is presented by the UA Health in Action program provider WIN for Alaska.

The UAF Community and Technical College is offering the Starting a Small Business workshop Thursday, Dec. 2, from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The workshop will focus on principles of a successful business including tips on planning, marketing, record keeping, taxes and financing your business. The Wood Center departments are hosting a United Way fundraiser chili cook-off Thursday, Dec. 2, from noon – 2 p.m. in the multilevel lounge. A $5 donation will get you a taste of each chili. The annual holiday open house and gift sale hosted by Alaska Sea Grant, UAF Marketing and Communications, and UA Press takes place Thursday, Dec. 2 from 2 – 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Wells Fargo Building at the corner of University Avenue and Geist Road. The Design Alaska Holiday Concert, featuring the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of the North, the University Chorus and the Northland Youth Choir, takes place Sunday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The UAF Women's and Gender Studies Program presents Where are the Women?, a panel discussion Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Wood Center Multi-Level Lounge. The panel will assess the institutional position of women faculty at UAF and will feature brief presentations by Melanie Arthur, Department of Sociology; Chris Coffman and Carolyn Kremers, both Department of English; and Carol Gold, Department of History. Alla Ivanchikova will moderate discussion between the panelists and the audience.

The Division of Student Services is hosting a retirement reception for Andrew Angaiak, director of Upward Bound, on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom.

ASUAF and the Blood Bank of Alaska are hosting a blood drive Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. in Wood Center Conference Rooms C and D. Valerie Barber, Agricultural Forestry and Experiment Station, is giving a birch bark crafts workshop Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Matanuska Experiment Farm in Palmer from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Participants will make ornaments and baskets out of birch bark. Nanook men's basketball hosts the Glacier Classic Wednesday – Thursday, Dec. 3 – 4, with UAA, British Columbia and Hawaii Pacific. The Nanooks take on British Columbia Dec. 3 and Hawaii Pacific Dec. 4, with both games at 7:30 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.
