UAF's class schedule will be online only, beginning with the fall 2011 issue. Questions and answers about the rationale behind a paperless schedule are online. For spring 2011 a reduced number of schedules will be printed to help students transition to relying on the online Course Finder or UAOnline to find the most current class listings. Please participate in a short survey to help determine what information needs to be included in a registration guide. For more information contact the Office of Admissions and the Registrar at 474-7500.

UAF faculty, staff and students are advised to never send personal identity information through e-mail and to ignore any e-mails requesting this type of information. OIT is noting an increase in phishing e-mails, targeted e-mail scams seeking personal information. Remember that legitimate organizations do not ask for this type of information via e-mail. Scott Bell is the new associate vice chancellor for facilities services. Bell, a UAF alumnus, begins his new duties Nov. 8. He succeeds Kathleen Schedler, who retired in fall 2009. Linda Zanazzo has been leading the department in the interim and will continue as part of the Facilities Services leadership team.

The UAF Bookstore asks faculty to continue to forward spring semester textbook adoptions as soon as possible as the information is needed to comply with the Higher Education Opportunity Act when registration opens. For more information contact Stephanie at 474-6963 or shbuggey@alaska.edu.

KUAC FM's fall fundraiser raised $275,745, more than $25,000 over its goal of $250,000. This is the largest amount raised in the history of KUAC.

The UAF Staff Council is seeking nominations for odd-numbered units until Nov. 9. Recommend someone from your department to represent your interests on the council.

Barbara Price and Bob Parr, UAF's Community and Technical College Human Services Department, have received their Human Services Board Certified Practitioner credential.

Peter Schweitzer, College of Liberal Arts Anthropology Department, has been named as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the International Arctic Science Committee Working Groups. IASC is an interdisciplinary committee charged with encouraging, facilitating and promoting arctic research at circumarctic and international levels.

The Office of Information Technology will be offering a variety of sessions and online tutorials to introduce the new interface and features for Blackboard v9.1. Blackboard will be upgraded to v9.1, named Blackboard Learn, the first week of January 2011.

UAF iTunes U is available for posting course content. Faculty who want to use iTunes U need to sign up for a course account. The Office of Information Technology offers Configuring Your iTunes U Course Account training sessions.

UAF has a free iPhone app available in the iTunes app store. UAFmobile includes a campus building and location map, online videos, news feeds and directory lookup. An update coming in November will include an improved map, shuttle tracker, ski trails map, emergency contact dialer and a course finder.

The Office of Information Technology is hosting a mobile application contest. Create an app for Apple, Blackberry or Android phones and enter to win an iPad and have your app published in the iTunes, Android or Blackberry app stores. The deadline for entry is Dec. 1.

The Office of Sustainability reminds UAF departments to recycle their old phone books. Paper waste, including phone books, can be dropped in any paper recycling bin (PDF) on campus.

The UA Press recently published City For Empire: An Anchorage History, 1914 – 1941 by Preston James and Bong Hits 4 Jesus: A Perfect Constitutional Storm in Alaska's Capital by James C. Foster.

Student Veterans of UAF, a new campus organization for students, staff and faculty, is holding its first meeting Thursday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. in 104 Books Building. The Office of Sustainability is holding a contest to determine UAF's 2011 sustainability theme. Ideas can be submitted online through Monday, Nov. 15.

The lecture is sponsored by the UA Geography Program, UAF Student Services, Chancellor's Office, Summer Sessions and the Office of International Programs.

The Midnight Sun Writers Series presents Sherry Simpson reading her original essays Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in the UA Museum of the North auditorium.

The Choir of the North presents its fall concert Friday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The choir will be joined by the Alaska Camerata, the Fairbanks Choral Arts Orchestra and guest soloist soprano Ruth Dobson. Pamela Couzin, State of Alaska Division of Retirement and Benefits, will be on campus the week of Nov. 15 – 19 to provide individual retirement counseling appointments and two evening workshops on the retirement process. A TRS retirement process evening session takes place Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the media classroom, 340 Rasmuson Library. Diwali, an annual celebration of Indian culture and cuisine, will take place Saturday, Nov. 20, from 7 – 10:30 p.m. in Wood Center Carol Wood ballroom. All proceeds benefit Project Ummid, a microfinance endeavor of UAF Students in Free Enterprise. Tickets are available at the Wood Center front desk and are $15 general admission, $12 students.

Grants and Awards

Roger Pearson, professor emeritus of the UA Geography Program, received the distinguished service award from the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. Pearson was recognized for his outstanding efforts on behalf of the Alaska Geographic Alliance.

Nov. 8:
Applications for Alaska EPSCoR award programs for spring 2011 are due by 5 p.m. Students and faculty at all UA campuses are encouraged to apply. Awards include travel grants, undergraduate and graduate research awards, and integrative faculty development awards. : Nominations for the Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence are due.
