Headlines

The University of Alaska Board of Regents named Patrick K. Gamble the next UA president. Gamble is currently chief executive officer of the Alaska Railroad Corp. and a retired four-star general with the U.S. Air Force. The transition between president Hamilton and Gamble is expected to take place in June.

The Nanook hockey team earned the number 4 seed in the NCAA Northeast Regional via an at-large berth for its first-ever NCAA Division 1 tournament appearance. The Nanooks will face off against Boston College on Saturday, March 27, at the DCU Center at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The winner of the Alaska-Boston game will face the winner of the North Dakota-Yale game in the NCAA Northeast Regional final on Sunday, March 28. The Nanook games will be broadcast live on KSUA 91.5 FM and streamed online from the station's website.

UAF Marketing and Communications is seeking your feedback about communication efforts at UAF. Please take 5 – 10 minutes to complete an internal communications survey. Once you've completed the survey you'll be directed to an informational page within the Marketing and Communications website with a wide range of communication tools and useful checklists.

The School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences has partnered with the national nonprofit Center for Food Integrity on a project to connect journalists with credible experts on food system issues. SNRAS professors Milan Shipka and Glenn Juday will take part in the project.

Michael Whalen, Geology and Geophysics Department and Geophysical Institute, is part of the research team which published a review in the journal Science affirming the theory that an asteroid ended the age of the dinosaurs.

UA Online PINs set to their owner's birth date will be converted to a random number on Thursday, March 25, to comply with federal privacy protection laws. To avoid interruption of access to UA Online, before March 25 please change your PIN if it is set to your birth date.

The UA Health in Action program Get the Point, run by WIN for Alaska, began in February. Participate in Get the Point and earn $50 when you enter your biometric data, earn another $50 if you reach the Tier 1 goal level. If you are not participating in Get the Point, but are a member of a gym, you can receive a $100 reimbursement by mailing in proof of your 2010 gym membership and the Health Club Reimbursement Form (doc). Biometric data entry and completion of Tier 1 must be done by Friday, April 30, to earn each $50 incentive. You may receive the incentives or health club reimbursement, but not both.

WIN for Alaska presents the Personal Wellness Profile for those enrolled in the UA health plan. The profile is a brief, online questionnaire that helps identify possible health risks and provides an immediate report to help you lower risks in problem areas. The results are yours and a $100 incentive is offered to participate. The questionnaire will be available Thursday, April 1.

Nathan Platt, Residence Life, received the new Educational Facilities Professional credential.

Jeremy Mathis, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, was appointed to the Science Steering Group for the North American Carbon Group of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program.

Gordon Kruse, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and UA President's Professor of Fisheries, testified in February before the Alaska Legislature’s House Finance Subcommittee on Fisheries. Kruse’s testimony and presentation provided an overview of UAF’s activities in fisheries and marine mammal research and SFOS partnerships with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Trent Sutton, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, is a guest editor for a special issue on lake whitefish health for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.




 

Events

WIN for Alaska is hosting Know Your Numbers Biometric Screenings in March and April. The next screening sessions take place Tuesday, March 23, from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Thursday, March 25, from 1 – 5 p.m. , both in Wood Center conference room B.

The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy will host a statewide webinar Tuesday, March 23, at 10 a.m. focusing on how increasing acidic ocean waters may affect Alaska's commercial fisheries. Register online. For more information call 474-7812.

The Academic Advising Center is hosting a series of skills workshops including Putting Your Degree to Work Tuesday, March 23, and Public Speaking and Beyond, Thursday, March 25. The Community Energy Lecture Series presents Here Comes the Sun: Making Solar a Viable Option in Alaska Tuesday, March 23, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Loon. Presenters are Jim Norman from ABS Alaskan and Todd Hoener from GVEA. The lecture series is sponsored by the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, the Cooperative Extension Service and the Renewable Energy Alaska Project.

The UAF Women's Center presents Celebrating the Power of Women's Voices - Women's History and Culture Month, with keynote speaker Diane Benson, Tuesday, March 23, with a reception at 7 p.m. and keynote speech at 7:45 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. The center also hosts Tale of Two Disappearing Women, a talk by by Sine Anahita Thursday, March 25, from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge. Check out the center's blog for more information.

Alaskan Voices: A Confluence of Cultures, a free concert and discussion highlighting Native influences on contemporary Alaskan composers, takes place Wednesday, March 24, at 8:15 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall.

The Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program is hosting the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference and Forum Wednesday – Saturday, March 24 – 27, in Unalaska.

The UAF Sustainable Campus Task Force presents the Bioneers Film Fest Thursday – Friday, March 25 – 26, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. The film fest showcases speakers from the 2009 Bioneers conference and is a fundraiser for the Earth Day fair in April. Admission is $2.

Discover UAF: Inside Out, hosted by the Office of Admissions, takes place Friday, March 26. Inside Out is an open house for high school juniors and seniors designed to showcase the university. Registration is required, but the event is free.

The UAF Student Drama Association presents Winter Shorts, student-directed and -produced one-act plays, featuring Back to Normal; Love and Peace, Mary Jo; Poetica Theatre; and Ground Squirrel Improv. Show times are Friday and Saturday, March 26 – 27, at 8:15 p.m., and Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m., in the Salisbury Theatre. Admission is $8 or $6 with a UAF ID.

The UA Museum of the North is hosting a Family Science Day, Looking for Life Across the Universe, Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 and must be purchased in advance.

UAF's Math in a Cultural Context program will host an April First Friday event with displays of books and materials, a chance to meet Yup'ik collaborators and an exhibit featuring the artwork of Putt Clark. The Math in a Cultural Context modules incorporate math into cultural activities such as berry picking, sewing parkas and star navigation. The First Friday event takes place April 2 from 3 – 8 p.m. at the Bowers Building, 2175 S. University Ave., Suite 101. For more information call 474-6996 .

The first annual Campus Research Day will take place Friday, April 9, from noon – 3 p.m. More than 20 labs across campus will be open for demos and tours. There will also be undergraduate and graduate poster sessions, available for viewing all day in the Reichardt building, and an undergraduate research symposium beginning at 2 p.m. in Elvey auditorium. An awards ceremony and keynote address titled “Venus: Earth’s Mysterious Sister” by Vice Chancellor Buck Sharpton will take place at 6 p.m. in Schaible auditorium.

A Passport to Chocolate, the 2010 UA Museum of the North Chocolate Bash, takes place Saturday, April 10, from 7:30 – 10 p.m. Tickets are $50. For more information call 474-7505.
