Headlines

E-Follett, UAF's online textbook partner, currently has textbooks available for purchase for core and developmental courses (course numbers that begin with F0 or end with an X). These books will be available through Friday, Feb. 5 in Constitution Hall. E-Follett's temporary store hours are Monday – Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturday, noon – 5 p.m.




 

For Your Information

UAF has chosen R/V Sikuliaq as the name for the Alaska Region Research Vessel. Sikuliaq is an Inupiaq word meaning young sea ice. A committee of scientists and university staff members chose the name after receiving more than 150 suggestions from the public.

Eric Heyne, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, was the guest editor for the fall 2009 issue of The Northern Review. The issue features work by more than 20 Alaskan writers and cover art by Da-ka-xeen Mehner, CLA. A reading by featured local writers will take place Saturday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Bear Gallery at Pioneer Park.

Alla Ivanchikova recently joined the College of Liberal Arts as an assistant professor of English.

Luis Martinez, Tanana Valley Campus Culinary Arts Program, hosted 18 high school students in the Interior Alaska Career Academy during the holiday break. The academy is a partnership between the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and TVC to enhance high school career exploration opportunities for students.

Carol Lewis and Nancy Tarnai, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, are serving on a national planning committee for the newly established College of Food System Experts hosted by the Center for Food Integrity.

Ashley Munro
, Financial Aid, was a panelist during the Jan. 14 national virtual event CollegeWeekLive: Paying for College. The Office of Admissions will participate in the CollegeWeekLive Spring College Fair, also held virtually, Wednesday – Thursday, March 24 – 25.

Deby Chapman is the new Alaska EPSCoR program administrator. Chapman took over for Anne Sudkamp, who resigned in December.

The UA Health in Action WIN for Alaska Get the Point Incentive Program begins Monday, Feb. 1 and runs through July 31. The program's goal is to help you incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle. Incentives are awarded at two- and four-month goal levels and include aerobic bands, a fitness watch, yoga mat, stainless steel hydration bottle, cash cards and an iPod Touch.

, the approved UA Board of Regents' FY11 operating and capital requests, is available online.

Results from the UAF Staff Council
election (PDF) for new representatives are available online. The council announced creation of a new online staff resources site hosted by UAF HR.

The UA Press
recently published Apun: The Arctic Snow by Matthew Sturm. The book teaches children about the science of snow and is geared toward third and fourth grade age levels. A companion book, Apun: The Arctic Snow – Teachers Guide, is also available.

The Cooperative Extension Service
master gardener program registration is now open. The class is limited to 25 students and meets 6 – 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 23 – March 25. Registration is due by Friday, Feb. 12. For more information contact Michele Hebert at mahebert@alaska.edu.

The Scenarios Network for Alaska Planning has created a new, user-friendly tool online to provide local climate change data to nearly every community in Alaska.

The UA College Savings Plan
encourages everyone to check the college savings box on line six of your PFD application to build a college savings account and to be entered to win a $25,000 scholarship or one of four $2,500 scholarship accounts.

The first day of classes for the spring 2010 semester is Thursday, Jan. 21. The deadline for late registration and fee payment is Friday, Jan. 29.




 

Events

The Science for Alaska lecture series begins 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 in the Westmark Gold Room with "New Energy for Alaska Communities" by Gwen Holdmann, director of the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. The next lecture in the series will be "Tooth-Walkers: Uncovering the Archaeology of Alaska's Walruses" Jan. 26 by Erica Hill, assistant professor of anthropology, UAS. The series continues in Fairbanks on Tuesdays through Feb. 23; selected lectures will also be offered in Anchorage and Juneau.

Modified Tai Chi
, presented by the UA Health in Action WIN for Alaska program, is held every Tuesday from 12:15 – 12:45 p.m. in the Akasofu Building lobby. Registration is not required.

The UA Health in Action WIN for Alaska January Midday Health Forum, How to Navigate the Get the Point Incentive Program, takes place Wednesday, Jan. 20, from noon – 12:30 p.m. in the Akasofu Building lobby.

The UAF Student Job Fair takes place Wednesday – Thursday, Jan. 27 – 28, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. UAF departments will have the opportunity to advertise job openings. For more information visit Career Services or call 474-7596.

Grants and Awards

The College of Rural and Community Development rural health programs received an award of $20,000 a year for three years from the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development Perkins grant to fund a new project designed to encourage male students to consider health careers.




 

Nanook women's basketball faces Western Oregon Thursday, Jan. 21, at 5:15 p.m. and Saint Martin's Saturday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

Nanook men's basketball takes on Western Oregon Thursday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Saint Martin's Saturday, Jan. 23, at 3:15 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

Nanook hockey faces off with Miami Ohio Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 – 22, at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Center.

The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – women's basketball vs. Montana State Billings, 49-67. Away games – men's basketball vs. Central Washington, 103-120, and vs. Western Washington, 71-87; hockey vs. Michigan, 0-6 and 3-3, Nanooks won shootout 1-0; swimming vs. Kutztown, 79-120.

Jan. 22: Applications are due for UAF faculty members interested in teaching for a term in Europe or Latin America in 2011 – 2012. Teaching opportunities are available in: Rosario, Argentina; Vienna, Austria; London, England; Angers, France; Athens, Greece; Macerata, Italy; Siena, Italy; Morelia, Mexico; and Oviedo, Spain. The program is offered through the Office of International Programs and the Northwest Council on Study Abroad, a consortium of 12 universities in Alaska, Oregon and Washington.
