The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center will close the Discovery Lab in Rasmuson Library by May 1 reflecting changes in ARSC funding priorities. ARSC will still offer summer tour presentations, which begin weekly June 2, at the center’s machine room viewing station, 109 Butrovich. Visitors will learn how scientists use supercomputers to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. For more information contact Debra Damron at 450-8662 or damron@arsc.edu.
The Alaska Center for Energy and Power is leading the Wind for Schools program in Alaska. The program offers hands-on science education for children and college students. Program partners are the Renewable Energy Alaska Project and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
UAF Dining Services has opened Library Coffee Express in the 24-hour study area in the Rasmuson Library. The cart is open Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. Polar Perk Coffee and Pizza in the Wood Center has relocated to the food court and the area where it was located is now Healthy Connection, which includes Sushi, Freshens Smoothies and a deli with sandwiches and soup. UniversiTea, offering fresh brewed loose-leaf tea, will be added later this semester .
Terry Johnson, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, was appointed by Gov. Parnell to the Alaska Boating Safety Advisory Council.
Judith Kleinfeld, College of Liberal Arts, recently had two studies about issues boys face in education published in the journal Gender Issues.

The UA Health in Action WIN for Alaska Get the Point Incentive Program begins today and runs through July 31. The program's goal is to help you incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle. Incentives are awarded at two- and four-month goal levels and include aerobic bands, a fitness watch, yoga mat, stainless steel hydration bottle, cash cards and an iPod Touch.

The Geophysical Institute and International Arctic Research Center Staff Council are hosting a valentine flower sale Friday, Feb. 12, from noon – 2 p.m. in the Elvey Globe Room. Red and pink roses will be available for three for $10 or a dozen for $35. Pre-order your flowers by e-mailing carolyn.simmons@gi.alaska.edu. Payment must be cash or check only.
The UAF Bookstore is celebrating African American History Month in February. Books on the history and heritage of African Americans are featured. The bookstore also has backpacks on sale at 25 percent off, Alaska wall calendars at 40 percent off and academic year calendars at 75 percent off. For more information call 474-6858.
The Office of Information Technology is changing the file retention policy on the OIT FTP server effective March 1. Files residing in the incoming and outgoing folders will be deleted at 11:59 p.m. 30 days after the file is created. For more information contact OIT at 450-8300 or helpdesk@alaska.edu.

The 2010 Science for Alaska Lecture Series continues Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Westmark Gold Room. "Breaking the Barrier: Tobacco's Effect on Lung Architecture" by Cindy Knall, assistant professor of immunology, UAA, takes place Feb. 2, and "What's Smoking Now? Fairbanks Air Quality and PM2.5" by Cathy Cahill, associate professor of chemistry, Geophysical Institute, UAF, takes place Feb. 9. The series continues in Fairbanks on Tuesdays through Feb. 23; selected lectures will also be offered in Anchorage and Juneau.
The Visitor Industry and Summer Jobs Fair, hosted by Career Services, takes place Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Wood Center.
The 2010 Alaska Tsunami Ocean Science Bowl, sponsored by Alaska Sea Grant and the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, takes place Friday – Sunday, Feb. 5 – 7, in Seward. The winning Alaska high school team will compete at the National Ocean Science Bowl finals in Florida in April.
Admissions presents Discover UAF: Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships Saturday, Feb. 6, for high school juniors and seniors and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and tour campus. The UA Museum of the North's annual open house takes place Saturday, Feb. 6, from noon – 4 p.m. Explore the museum behind the scenes, learn about the museum’s future butterfly pavilion and enjoy hands-on activities for children. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7505.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, sponsored by Outdoor Adventures, Student Activities and Beaver Sports, takes place Sunday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Admission is $12 in advance, $14 at the door for general admission, $10 in advance and $12 at the door for students. Tickets are on sale at the Wood Center front desk and Beaver Sports.
The Humanities Research Colloquium presents a talk by Leonard Kamerling, UA Museum of the North and College of Liberal Arts, "The Maasai Migrants Film Project: An Experiment in Applied Visual Anthropology" Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1 – 2 p.m. in 405 Gruening.
Dancing with the Cars, a fundraiser to support the UAF Arctic Innovation Competition and Doyon Foundation scholarships, takes place Friday, Feb. 12, from 7 – 11 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. Join Chancellor Rogers and Sherry Modrow, and celebrate UAF and Fairbanks community partnerships with food, music, dancing, a live auction and a preview of the Fairbanks Concert Association's performance by Street Beat. The Alaska Skijoring and Pulk Association presents skijor races on the West Ridge Ski Trails Sunday, Feb. 14, as part of the Race Across the Valley series (PDF). Sign-ups take place from noon - 12:30 p.m. in the ski hut and the race begins at 1 p.m. There are four- and eight-mile courses; skijorers can be pulled by up to three dogs. UAF won nine Public Relations Society of America Alaska Chapter Awards of Excellence and one Aurora Award for 2009. The Marketing and Communications Department received five awards: second place, speech writing, Convocation 2009; third place, external publication, Aurora Magazine; third place, web site, Aurora Website; third place, special printed promotional materials, Alaska Native publication; and honorable mention, special printed promotional material, UAF Works. The Tanana Valley Campus received three awards: second place, external publication, UAF Tanana Valley Campus Course Schedule; second place, brochure, UAF Tanana Valley Campus: Small School Atmosphere, Big School Opportunity; and second place, video material, Invest. KUAC received two awards: second place, public service, Understanding Digital Television (Aurora Award) and second place, direct mail solicitation, KUAC FM and AlaskaOne Donor Appeals. UAF won more awards than any other organization in the state for 2009.
The UA Museum of the North is partnering with the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska and the Anchorage Museum’s Imaginarium Discovery Center to develop climate change exhibits and an outreach program for rural school districts. The project is funded by a $980,000 NASA grant. Museum education director Laura Conner developed the collaboration concept and wrote the grant proposal.
