Registration is open for the fall semester; classes begin Thursday, Sept. 2. The deadline for adding classes, late registration and fee payment is Friday, Sept. 10, 6 p.m. in person and midnight at UAOnline. Visit the UAF academic calendar for details.
Vladimir Romanovsky, Geophysical Institute, is the lead author of an article published in Permafrost and Periglacial Processes that describes the thermal state of northern hemisphere permafrost during the International Polar Year of 2007 – 2009.
Olga Skinner is the newest Rural Student Services advisor. Skinner's previous position was at the Geophysical Institute.
Donald Fraser Behrend, former UA vice president for academic affairs and UAA chancellor, died July 25 after a battle with brain cancer.
The 14th annual Red Green Regatta was held July 25 and featured 90 vessels, the largest number ever. Awards were presented by Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
The UA Press has published A Woman in the Polar Night, by Christiane Ritter, with an introduction by Lawrence Millman.
Nancy Tarnai, School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, served as chair of UAF's Golden Days Parade committee. She and the committee thank the participants in the 2010 parade, including the marching band coordinated by the Music Department, 4-H, FFA, Summer Sessions, UAF Athletics, Facilities Services, the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UAF Community and Technical College, Center for Distance Education, UA Press, Printing Services, SNRAS, Marketing and Communications, Fairbanks Shakespeare Theater, Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and others. In the event of a fire please follow these guidelines: Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station and call 911, then evacuate the building, go to your predetermined meeting location and count your team members. Stay there until all members are accounted for, tell emergency personnel if someone is still in the building and do not enter the building until emergency personnel say it is safe to do so.
Most UAF offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Monday Marvels, free lectures with hands-on sessions presented by Alaska Summer Research Academy faculty members, take place Mondays through Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. in 201 Reichardt. The series includes "Squidding Around: Adaptations to Life in the Oceans" Aug. 9 by Ann Knowlton, Institute of Marine Science.
UAF Day at the Tanana Valley State Fair is Tuesday, Aug 10. Fairgoers receive $1 off daily admission with current UAF PolarExpress card or current UAF Alumni Association card.
UAF Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer with Reel History – Documenting Alaska with Dog Gone Addiction Tuesday, Aug. 10; and Reeling Green with Small Fortunes: Microcredit and the Future of Poverty Thursday, Aug. 12. All movies will be shown at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.
The fourth annual Alaska Book Festival presents a series of Wednesday lectures to celebrate literature from and about Alaska July 14 – Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. Lectures include "Five must reads for those interested in glaciology" by Bruce Molnia, author of Glaciers in Alaska, Aug. 11; "Five must reads for those new to Alaska" by Greg Hill and Dermot Cole, Aug. 18; and special guest author Charles Wohlforth will discuss his new book The Fate of Nature: Rediscovering our Ability to Rescue the Earth, Aug. 25.
UAF will host a public listening session about the Gulf Coast oil spill with UAA Chancellor Fran Ulmer, who is a member of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling Thursday, Aug. 12, at 7:30p.m. at the Princess Hotel Jade Room . The session features a panel of UAF research faculty who will give their perspectives on the spill.
The fourth UArctic Rectors’ Forum will take place at UAF Friday – Sunday, Aug. 13 – 15. The central theme of this year's forum will be "Sustainability, Resilience and Community Adaptation to Climate Change in the North: Postsecondary Education’s Role."
The Really Free Market takes place Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Nenana parking lot across the road from the Patty Center. Drop off clean, usable items between 8 – 10 a.m.
Alaska Agriculture Appreciation Day will be celebrated at the Matanuska Experiment Farm in Palmer Tuesday, Aug. 17, with exhibits and activities hosted by the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension Service, and the state Division of Agriculture.
The Office of Information Technology hosts training opportunities throughout the year and offers walk-in sessions most Fridays. A full training calendar is available online. OIT is offering a full day Blackboard course design workshop session Wednesdays, Aug 18 and Aug. 25. Register for this special course online, seating is limited to eight participants.
Pat Pitney and the Administrative Services directors will hold an open forum Thursday, Aug. 19, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in Wood Center conference rooms C and D. The forum is open to all staff; deans, directors and fiscal officers are encouraged to attend. For more information call 474-7907.
An open house for new faculty and staff, "What Fairbanks has to Offer You," takes place Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 3 – 5 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. This event is free.
The Center for Research Services hosts the second annual Undergraduate Research Fair Friday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. Faculty and staff have the chance to recruit undergraduate students for volunteer, paid or for-credit research opportunities. If your department wants to host a booth, contact Jenn Wagaman by Aug. 10. If you have opportunities to advertise but can't host a booth, you are welcome to provide fliers and information for display. The UA Museum of the North offers 30-minute movies, Dynamic Aurora, Winter and You Are Here, throughout the day all summer. You must purchase a $5 movie pass, in addition to museum admission, for unlimited access to all the day's shows. The museum's summer exhibit is "Then & Now: The Changing Arctic Landscape." The museum is open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily May 15 – Sept. 15.

Nanook women's volleyball takes on the Fairbanks Flyers Friday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. The Alaska volleyball alumni game takes place Saturday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. Both games will be held in the Patty Center.
