Chancellor Rogers hosts fall convocation Thursday, Sept. 9, from 1 – 2 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The theme will be "Learning from the Past, Preparing for the Future." An ice cream social in the Great Hall and at each of the rural campuses will take place afterwards. The event will also be webcast.
New Student Orientation continues through Sept. 1. Chancellor Rogers will address students at the orientation welcome Monday, Aug. 30, at 9:30 a.m. in Davis Concert Hall.
The UAF Bookstore invites students to stop by and participate in fall promotions and browse the new larger selection of UAF gear and clothing. Books are back! New and used books, e-books and, in some cases, textbooks for rent are available.
The UAF Student Job Fair takes place Wednesday – Thursday, Sept. 8 – 9, in Wood Center. UAF departments will be recruiting students for fall job openings. For more information contact Career Services at 474-7596.
UAF students have opportunities to conduct volunteer, paid or for-credit research at UAF. Learn more at the UAF research fair, Friday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge.
Parking Services announced fee changes in June, including to the cost of parking permits and tickets, and changes in permit structures. Purchase your permit online or chat with staff about your parking options.
The College of Rural and Community Development has moved its college bookstore operation, which is separate from Follett, to a stand-alone CRCD bookstore in Fairbanks at 2175 Davis Road, Suite 104. CRCD cross-regional and Center for Distance Education local students can buy new or used books on-site or order books online. Textbook rentals will be available for spring 2011. The UAF Community and Technical College, formerly the Tanana Valley Campus, officially changed its name July 1.
The Admissions Office and the Office of the Registrar have been combined. Students should go to the service window on first floor Signers' Hall or the one-stop kiosk located there. The number to call for information is 474-7500.
Campus Safety Week will be Sept. 20 – 24. The event is intended to increase awareness and preparation on the UAF campus. Call 474-7721 for more information. Sign up to receive emergency text alerts on your cell phone at the UAF on Alert website.
The Department of Alaska Native Studies, formerly under the College of Liberal Arts, is now combined with the Rural Development Program, under the College of Rural and Community Development. This move broadens the range of course offerings and includes distance delivery of a bachelor's degree in Alaska Native Studies.
The Computer Science Department is now housed in the College of Engineering and Mines. The engineering and computer science programs are accredited by the same organization. The Computer Science Department will remain in the Chapman Building.
Students or parents will be able to enroll in a monthly payment plan through the UAF Business Office. The Tuition Management System program includes online enrollment, monthly payment plans, increased call center hours, mailed monthly statements and life insurance underwritten by New York Life Insurance Co. to cover the plan.
Shuttle Bus routes have resumed for fall 2010 with limited times and will resume normal hours Thursday, Sept. 2. Please be sure to check the schedule for details or call 474-RIDE (7433).
UAF Facilities Services has partnered with the Fairbanks North Star Borough MACS bus system to provide final bus service to the main campus from 604 Barnette St. and the Downtown Center. The 604 Barnette St. pick up is at 9:03 p.m. at the MACS bus stop on 7th Ave., and the Downtown Center pick up is at 9:06 p.m. at the parking garage bus stop on Lacey Street. This service replaces the late UAF shuttle service; passengers who miss the MACS bus will need to arrange for alternate transportation. All UAF students, faculty and staff are able to ride the MACS bus system for free with a valid PolarExpress card.

Derek Sikes, UA Museum of the North, is a contributor to a series of 10 reports published in the August 2010 issue of the journal Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research.
The UAF 2009 – 2010 promotion and tenure recipients are listed online. Awards of tenure and/or promotion were effective July 1.
FY11 budget information is available on the chancellor's website including the FY11 reallocation detail, a recording of the budget portion of the Aug. 19 open forum hosted by the vice chancellor for administrative services, and a form to submit your questions.

Debasmita Samaddar, a recent UAF Ph.D. physics graduate, accepted an offer of an ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) postdoctoral fellowship. ITER is an international effort to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy.
Cooperative Extension Service has published a new comprehensive gardening manual, Sustainable Gardening: The Alaska Master Gardener Manual. The book is adapted for Alaska from the Sustainable Gardening: The Oregon-Washington Master Gardener Handbook. Contributors include current and former Extension faculty Michele Hébert, Stephen Brown, Jeff Smeenk, Tom Jahns, Bob Gorman, Fred Sorensen, Julie Riley, Heidi Rader, Bob Wheeler, Peter Bierman and Jay Moore.
The Alaska History Store, operated by Digital Photographic Services in the Rasmuson Library, has published its 2011 calendar. The black and white calendar images celebrate aspects of life in days gone by. The cost is $15; funds from sales help support the access and preservation work of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections.
Cooperative Extension Service has published the fourth edition of A Solar Design Manual for Alaska, revised and updated by author Rich Seifert, CES energy and housing specialist.

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power hosts a community lecture, "Biomass: A Sustainable Option for Alaska?" Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 6 p.m. at the Blue Loon. The lecture will focus on biomass technology projects and residential wood-burning in Alaska.

The UAF Alumni Association is hosting its reunion weekend, honoring the classes of 1960 and 1985, Thursday – Saturday, Sept. 23 – 25. The reunion luncheon will be Sept. 24 at 11:30 a.m. at the Princess Riverside Lodge, and the UAF Athletic Hall of Fame brunch will be Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. The Office of Information Technology hosts training opportunities throughout the year and has walk-in sessions most Fridays. A full training calendar is available online. Beginning in September, two different podcast-related courses and a course about iTunes U will be offered. Microsoft 2010 courses will be offered in October.

Nanook women's volleyball takes on California State East Bay Thursday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.
The 2010 Nanook Classic volleyball tournament takes place Friday – Saturday, Sept. 3 – 4, in the Patty Center gym. The Nanooks take on Charleston Sept. 3 at 8 p.m., Bellarmine Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. and California State East Bay Sept. 4 at 8 p.m.
